“…I became the best cop in the world. I became Kung Fury.”
Kung Fury It started off as a fun mashup of everything you could get from mashing up the ’80s, if you weren’t actually living at the time. Kung Fu.
Arcade games are part of it, and Kung Fury: Street Rage – Ultimate Edition comes to Switch with a set of (very) simple brawlers that harken back to the days of throwing tokens into cabinets at Bally’s Aladdin’s Castle. .
I say “very simple” because you have 4 characters to choose from, but play exactly the same. An 8-bit enemy will pounce on you and you will have to use your left or right to time your attacks and take them down. No jumps, no power-ups, no pieces of meat to eat to restore health (ugh!), just waves of thugs you can take down. If you time your attack wrong, you lose hearts. If you lose 3 hearts, it’s game over.

Similar to Double Dragon type games, movement in Kung Fury is literally limited to left and right attacks. You can only move by attacking, and you may temporarily leave the enemy’s attack zone, but that’s about it.
The Ultimate Edition is divided into 4 modes: Tutorial, Kung Fury: Street Rage (endless brawler), Kung Fury: Arcade Strikes Back (single player “story” mode with multiple levels), Kung Fury: One Day on the Beach (story mode with 2 player option).

Despite the gameplay’s simplicity, it’s quite challenging, especially in the final wave, where enemies swarm and choosing which one to attack is essential to victory.
There’s not much difference between the versions of the game, the story is simply going to different places and beating people up.
