One of the highlights of Summer Game Fest was the announcement of Sonic Superstars coming to Switch later this year.
As part of the event, gaming media and industry insiders were able to try out the game ahead of its release. We’ve compiled just a few of our initial impressions, but will continue to add to this as more information is shared.
It’s also worth noting that the playable version offered at this event is an actual demo. That means fans will likely be able to play this same build in the near future. Here’s what has been said so far about Sonic Superstars.

Bryan Shea: “I really enjoyed my time on Sonic Superstars. My initial assessment after seeing the gameplay featured in yesterday’s trailer was that it’s basically the Sega version of Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. series. Sonic Superstars not only feels good, it feels bold and novel, something the New Super Mario Bros. series doesn’t have anymore, but it’s a strong continuation of the original 2D Sonic game. I can’t wait to experience more of this modern 2D adventure when Sonic Superstars comes out, arriving this fall.”

Andy Robinson: “I just played Sonic Superstars. It’s a very good start. It seems to have avoided many of the mistakes of past side-scrolling games. The movement is exactly the same as the original Sonic, and the visuals are lively.” It’s full of demo-level verticality, unique bosses, and original idea powers like emerald.I’m optimistic.”

So far Summer Game Fest It was the best thing I’ve played on ”…this is an incredible interpretation of Sonic that feels like the mania is back…but know, it’s good . “
