Despite ongoing rumors and speculation, Nintendo has yet to reveal a successor to the Switch. Although there is no sign of an announcement yet, company president Shuntaro Furukawa has revealed details about the transition from the current hybrid platform to the “next-generation machine.”
According to Furukawa’s comments in Nintendo’s recent shareholder Q&A, the plan is to make the transition to next-gen as smooth as possible for customers using the existing Nintendo Account system. Below are excerpts from Nintendo’s president’s statement, translated by Twitter user Genki.
Shuntaro Furukawa: “Regarding the transition from Nintendo Switch to the next-generation console, we would like to do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition for our customers while utilizing their Nintendo Account.”
Nintendo has improved certain account services, but in the past it hasn’t always been the easiest transition from one generation to the next. They’ve also had their ups and downs when it comes to online infrastructure over the years, often taking a rather unique approach when it comes to certain aspects of online gaming. Also, there is no promise (yet) that a user’s existing digital game library will necessarily be inherited, and may not necessarily reflect what is found on other platforms.
At the very least, this latest update from the company’s president seems to confirm that Nintendo will make it easier for users already in the ecosystem. It is also noted that there are now 290 million Nintendo accounts of him covering both consoles and mobile devices.
Again, there is no concrete information about Nintendo’s next-gen hardware yet. And indeed, Nintendo doesn’t seem ready to move on from the Switch, especially after the latest Direct, giving new life to aging technology with announcements such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
