Shio is coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S today, along with a new Arena mode, so there’s no better time to check out this unique martial arts fighting game. It’s one of a kind, with skillful action combat and a unique mechanic that makes your character grow older with each kill.
We had the opportunity to speak with Pierre Tarno, Executive Producer at Sloclap, the Paris studio that produced the game.he explained in detail how Shio its success and future.
how was it Shio to be born?
The idea for the title is thanks to my partner, Jordan Layani, who practices kung fu and is a big fan of martial arts movies. Bruce wanted to use this particular environment, taking inspiration from Lee and Jackie Chan films, but couldn’t say it kept his tone for the same action-comedy. Next, the title tries to answer a philosophical question as well. Is a lifetime enough to master kung fu? This question led to the concept of hero aging that makes this game unique.
Did you think it was dangerous to rely on a genre that is less popular than it was decades ago?
Independent studios can afford to take a little more risk. We didn’t do any market research to see what segments of gamers or fans of martial arts movies would be interested in our game… instead, for the game to work from a commercial perspective, it has to be very It started with the principle that it must be excellent at good. Also, in the end, we were confident because the genre is so underrepresented in the world of video games, because his 3D fighting games with his bare hands, which also rely on the use of the environment, are rare, so we We knew our games would find an audience. If we had decided to make an FPS, things would have been more complicated.
Your first title, Absolver, already featured a lot of hand-to-hand combat, Shio heir to it?
In Absolver, you’ve gained specific experience in action games, such as how enemies collide during combat and how you manage your distance from your opponents. Shio A pure single-player game, where Absolver shined in 1v1, Shio Really designed for you to be alone with everyone. Yes, we learned a lot from the first game, but there are also many elements we had to change to reinvent it.
From the first trailer, Shio You got a lot of attention, what was your reaction?
It’s always nice to feel that your creative intentions resonate with the masses, and it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to predict. I felt we were creating something that would appeal to a certain number of players. It was very exciting for the team.
And how did it unfold once the game was available?
When it released in 2022, the title was probably too difficult and could have been frustrating. . That’s why in the first update we created a low difficulty “Student” mode, but also added a higher difficulty mode “Master” level. After that, through other updates, we added gameplay modifiers that let you customize your experience, a Replay His Editor that let you create your own martial arts shorts, and an arena mode that makes the game even richer.
What can you expect in this new game mode?
It is a mode independent from the story that can be started after the prologue ends, and it also serves as a tutorial. At launch, nine original his arenas inspired by campaign levels await you, where you will have to complete challenges. Some of them are related to your performance, your character’s age.In total, there are 5 different types of challenges available. It’s a way to rediscover game mechanics in new environments, with new objectives and different gameplay.if you like ShioI think you will enjoy the feeling of progressing, improving and unlocking the next level.
What can I expect from Sloclap in the future and what can I expect?
Another update for arena mode is already planned, with additional arenas and will be released in the coming months. At the same time, part of the team is already working on his third project, and once completed Shioto begin the design phase of the fourth project.
