Skate posted another video of insider highlights from the closed playtest. I want to play the skateboarding game because of how hard I am laughing that these skaters are totally eating. However, I am not considered an insider by EA and cannot play. It’s a shame, because these insiders seem to be having so much fun.
The footage that Watermark describes as “pre-pre-alpha gameplay” is exactly what it sounds like: skaters slamming into things, grabbing structures, traversing an absurd-looking level designer course, and a few more. A highlight trick to pull off the game. A few fun and choppy skater rock overlays complete the vibe.
And the vibe is that this makes what is certainly a junk and broken mess of a game in development look very fun to play. You can see that last man slide off the board in the middle of the grind like his shoes have been soaped. Skate’s reboot is clearly still early, but instead of cringing at the junk, it’s just laughing. It’s fun to watch the crooked, silly putty people get into a horrific accident and quickly return to high-five each other. It’s like jackass with no consequences.
These highlights were especially fun. still working (opens in new tab) The trailer was released early last year.look at it and then August 2022 (opens in new tab) and November 2022 (opens in new tab) Playtest Highlights gives you a glimpse into the game as it develops. Animations and physics, in particular, are noticeably less stiff from video to video.
Skate is the reboot of EA’s popular open world skateboarding series, which ended over a decade ago. The original is known for its unique gesture-based trick system and chaotic approach to skateboarding, which naturally allows you to go all sorts of places. You can do kickflips and Superman in much the same way in the city of St. Vansterdam. As you can see in the highlights, there’s also a wild course creator tool that lets you create the weird empty palace sandboxes that made games like Trackmania famous.
