Sony was very pleased with the work done by outside developer Firewalk Studios on the yet-to-be-announced game and decided to acquire part and parcel of the development studio with the game in progress. I don’t know much about Firewalk, which was founded in , but I do know they were working on some sort of live service game.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has previously locked in an exclusive multiplayer game of sorts, Firewalk’s debut title.it was in 2021 (opens in new tab)and two years later, Sony apparently liked it so much that they decided to nip the problem of future Firewalk titles escaping the first-party shield. Become a development team.
Firewalk is now a sizable studio, with nearly 150 developers, but was originally made up mostly of Bungie veterans. Most notably Tony Hsu, formerly Executive Vice President of Destiny at Activision, and Ryan Ellis, Creative. Director of Bungie.
Jim Ryan, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: A strong addition to PlayStation Studios’ portfolio, its live service and technical expertise will help extend PlayStation’s reach. ”
Ryan’s characteristically mushy reaction is no big deal. Those big companies love to acquire service and technical expertise, right?
“We’ve brought together the industry’s most inspiring talent to deliver awe-inspiring new worlds and experiences filled with amazing core gameplay. We want to build something new for our players.” The excitement has completely energized the team and partners, and we are playtesting every day,” Firewalk’s Hsu said of the acquisition.
Meanwhile, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst reiterated that Sony was impressed with what Firewalk is doing in the multiplayer space.
“We continue to be impressed by the team’s ambition to build modern multiplayer games that connect players in new and innovative ways. The studio creates inspiring worlds based on outstanding gameplay. We share our passion to do so and we want to continue to invest in their mission,” said Hulst.
This is something that all those watching for game studio types should take note of.
