Sony’s massive press conference at E3 2006 quickly became legendary.Awkward, baffling, hilarious, and stiff all at once, this press advertised the PSP and revealed the PlayStation 3’s price range in an early, if unintentional, way. viral youtube videos Memeize the most absurd moments and other widespread ridicule. And now, thanks to documentary artist Danny O’Dwyer’s conservation efforts, we can watch the broadcast in his stunning 4K.

Through his crowdfunded documentary channel Noclip, O’Dwyer has slowly unearthed and unveiled decades of video game history.from From gameplay of unreleased titles, to discarded 10-year-old interviews with Hideo Kojima, and unreleased trailers, he has everything. And on July 21st, he uploaded Sony’s two-hour E3 2006 presentation in the highest possible quality (2160p, 60fps). Folks, this is a time capsule worth seeing for the first time if you haven’t seen it. For those who have seen him, he is worth reliving in HD. Believe me, you are having a great time. So let’s pull ourselves together and take a moment to remember this stupid conference.
The presentation had some cool games
Some very cool games were shown during the presentation. Siphon Filter: Dark Mirrorthe fifth installment in the currently dormant third-person stealth shooter series, has been introduced alongside the PS3 launch titles The Tale of Genji Blade Days.the best god of war clone, sky sword, revealed in some cinematic gameplay. And for the first time we knew what was going to happen Uncharted: Drake’s Fate, the game that would introduce one of Naughty Dog’s most iconic IPs. On the gaming front, Sony’s E3 2006 press conference helped.
Even the awkward moments were nostalgic
But there were some really awkward moments between those gameplay demos and the teaser trailer. Then-president and CEO Kaz Hirai tried to get the crowd excited by yelling “Riiidge Racer!”of The Tale of Genji Blade Days After promoting the game’s historical roots, the presenter battled giant enemy crabs that deal massive damage when hit in their weaknesses. There’s a random guy on the street talking about how it hurts to win against someone in a PS3 game because “I don’t know.” It was an outrageous presentation that was as hilarious as it was legendary.
The price of the PlayStation 3 was ‘bad’
The presentation began with Mr. Hirai’s elation talking about the PS2’s incredible success. Best-selling game console of all time, the ending was a serious misfire. After bragging about the previous generation and showing off the next generation of dope games, Hirai has revealed the price of his PS3. $500 for a 20 GB console and $600 for a 60 GB console. The announcement was met with a bang, perhaps in part because the Xbox 360 has been on the market for a few months already and is fairly cheap. It was a puzzling pricing that made me nauseous, PS3 still sold slightly more than Xbox 360 throughout its lifetime.
save footage that may be lost forever
by email to Kotaku, O’Dwyer elaborated on the work put into uploading this memorable press conference. A video game website saved him on two of his HDCAM tapes and sent them to a landfill before O’Dwyer could rescue them, but he said he had “basically done nothing” with the footage, simply ripping it from tape and converting it to HD.
“The process is very simple, using a professional HDCAM tape deck to extract the signal. [Series Digital Interface (SDI)]said O’Dwyer. “I used a converter to convert to HDMI and recorded using a high quality capture device. Once saved to my PC I can export the 4K version for YouTube (to access the higher bitrates available) and the native resolution 1080p version for archiving and upload the file to the archive without re-rendering.”
When asked why he thought Sony’s E3 2006 presentation had become so infamous, O’Dwyer theorized that memes were far more rare at the time, so simple phrases like “Riiidge Racer” or “huge enemy crab” could easily stick in one’s head. Whatever the forces behind it, a conference like this is one of the greatest in video game history he’s stumbled upon since he set out to preserve “thousands of tapes” that were almost permanently lost.
Of other favorites, O’Dwyer said: Nintendo Space World Demo Because it’s such a beloved film that no one has a clean copy,” O’Dwyer said. “My personal favorite is Knights of the Old Republic E3 Demo It was something I had never seen before. Especially considering where that franchise is located. ” [A remake announced in September 2021 has been indefinitely delayed.] “We know fans love to analyze that video.

What O’Dwyer is doing is very important work.Given that 87% of classic games are disappearing over timeOld hardware is hard to find and hard to maintain, in large part, but there is some comfort in knowing that there are people working to preserve the history of video games. Because if you don’t remember where you were, you can’t know where you’re going.
