Major Wii U games affected by a security vulnerability disclosed in December were taken offline to fix or completely remove the attack vector.
Nintendo’s Network status page has been updated with the following notes for the 2014 and 2015 releases:
Due to a vulnerability in the online play of this network service, we have started temporary emergency maintenance. We anticipate an extended maintenance period to address these issues, but we do not have a date for when online play will resume. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
Error 106-8011 is displayed when attempting to play an affected game online.
The ENBufferPwn exploit is a critical vulnerability that affected Nintendo’s online games dating back to 2011’s Mario Kart 7. It could be used for full console takeover, including enabling the camera and audio recording features of the Wii U GamePad and 3DS. The affected Switch games and the aforementioned Mario Kart 7 have been updated to fix the game at the application level.
