Image of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor A physical copy of the PS5 reveals the words “Download Required” printed on the cover of the box. This caused an uproar among console players who believed that games, especially single-player games, should be playable from a physical disc without requiring an internet connection. The fact that it requires a download isn’t all that surprising considering the file size is huge at 147 GB.
Game’s 4K texture files may not fit on disk
as mentioned Star Wars Jedi on Reddit, a photo from retailer Mighty Ape shows the very small words “download required” above the age bracket on the PS5 cover. Ultra-HD Blu-ray discs can only hold about 100 GB of data, so it’s no surprise that players will have to download the rest of the game from EA’s downloads server. That said, it’s unclear if the disc contains part of the game, or if it just has a download key.
Either way, this means that if the game’s servers go down, players who haven’t installed the game yet won’t be able to play the game from the disc. You have to.) Of course, no one else can download the game at that point.
In any case, all this trouble with physical copies of games for the last few generations of consoles has made many players accustomed to digital downloads, forced or not. We mostly expect an internet connection at this point, though, as we want access to day one patches and future updates for any game.
PS5 players can start preloading the game on April 25-26, about two days before the game’s full release.
