Starship troopers: Extermination (opens in new tab) is a squad-based co-op FPS that puts you in the boots of the Deep Space Vanguard, an elite special force of mobile infantry sent to the planet Valaka to trample hordes of bloodthirsty bugs.
The game will feature three playable classes: Assault, Defense, and Support, as well as five unique spider-web enemies when Early Access launches next year. Players will battle on a “massive map” with 5 unique zones, buildable defenses (walls, towers, etc.), and various mission types in escalating ground battles. “Service guarantees citizenship”. You also unlock new weapons, equipment, and perks for each class through the game’s character progression system.
The most interesting thing about Starship Troopers: Extermination is that up to 12 players can work together in teams of 4. This promises to bring a proper sense of scale to big bug battles. I don’t think Starship Troopers was a particularly good movie, skirmish scene (opens in new tab) It’s arguably the main fodder for broadening video game action.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is being developed by Offworld Industries. Offworld Industries knows a thing or two about creating co-op shooters. It’s the studio behind Squad. (opens in new tab)is a co-op military FPS launched in 2020 after being in Steam Early Access for 5 years.
“Working as a team is essential. General communication is almost as important,” wrote Squad Review 2020. (opens in new tab)“Usually when I play online I keep my headset at a safe distance from my mouth and ears, but when I play Squad I always use one… with a vulgar grunt.” It can literally be a life saver even when you’re playing. It sets the mood.”
Squad is a relatively hardcore military shooter, and I think Starship Troopers: Extermination will be relatively laid back. Bug catcher, right? Still, it will be interesting to see how the studio applies what it’s learned from creating a more realistic FPS.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is set to enter Early Access on Steam in 2023. Check the screen below.
