Super Mega Baseball 4 will officially release on June 2nd for Nintendo Switch and other platforms. Check out the trailer and screenshots below. We also had the opportunity to speak on a Zoom call with Scott Drader, Studio Director and Senior Producer at Metalhead Software, about the upcoming Super Mega Baseball 4. Thanks to Scott and all the PR staff for coordinating this!
PN: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your responsibilities on the project.
Scott Drader co-founded the studio with Christian Zuger in 2009. So it’s been a long time for me to work on Super Mega, the 2021 acquisition brings him to EA. Currently, he is the director and senior producer of the super mega-franchise studio. I’m doing a lot of the same things I’ve been doing with this series for a very long time, and I’m looking forward to talking with EA about what’s new.
PN: It’s been about three years since Super Mega Baseball 3 was released. Tell us about the development of Super Mega Baseball 4. What was the main goal of this iteration?
EA came in during the pandemic and said, ‘I love your baseball game, I love your team and studio. It’s obviously a big decision when you’ve worked on an independent team for 10 years, but it all makes sense what you’ve heard about how they handle creative approaches in new games. and I learned a lot by working for a bigger company, but EA has been very supportive and treated us very well, so the new Super Mega game is the first I think it feels like a logical progression of three games, hopefully with a little fanfare and star power around it that we wouldn’t have been able to do on our own.
PN: How is Super Mega Baseball 4 different from other baseball franchises like MLB The Show?
On the field, I think the game is pretty true to the sport in terms of statistical results. It hasn’t changed anything. Like many other games from EA Sports and other AAA sports sims, what makes us very different and different from MLB The Show is that we regularly break away from credibility in the spirit of pure fun. Gaming exists in a space that seems to lie somewhere between the sports simulators that have long dominated the market and pure video games. We make many decisions in the spirit of pure fun from a video game perspective. It’s true to the sports on the field, but seeing the mechanics and content surrounding the gameplay on the field, the mechanics and content of the franchise mode, the fictional world the game is built on, and all of that makes it a little more fun, video game humor, and more. A little more in the direction of the parody. I’ve always thought of it as a kind of hybrid space, somewhere between traditional simulation sports games and pure video games.
PN: I’ve seen Super Mega Baseball 4 include caricatures of former professional players, is there any chance of a fully licensed MLB team/roster in the future?
It’s a very interesting design challenge when you have a series that’s rooted in fictional content, and a lot of the existing player-base community fits perfectly with that fictional content. I know it can bring a lot of excitement and legitimacy from the perspective of people who may have passed by this series over the years because it had nothing to do with real-world players. I knew it was my chance. What’s the right first step for a game regarding fictional content? What’s the right first step for licensing? It’s like a timeless celebration of baseball that you can get on opening day, the All-Star break, or in the middle of hockey season. it doesn’t matter. It’s a celebration of baseball, and it felt like a really good step for the first series to bring in the timeless heroes of this sport.
In the new game, you’ll find that there’s a new built-in league featuring only the historical legends of the sport. It’s called the Legend League, so it’s the easiest way to play with everyone. You can go in there and it’s basically roughly organized by era. In other words, Legend League teams are basically pitting players from slightly different eras of baseball against each other. From a gameplay perspective, everything is well balanced. Not all Legend players look like A-plus or S-tier players. It’s a really fun integration. That’s another way of doing it. As for what’s happening with Legends, you’ll find that Pennant Race is rooted in the same core-balanced league that it did with Super Mega Baseball 3’s Pennant Race. A randomized player for each team in the Super Mega League. We have to think about all the pennant races, including which team benefits the most from Legend his players who are on our team this week.
We’ve also done everything we can to keep you very flexible about how you want to play the game. Some people want to play with traditional fictional content. Some people want to play with customized content. Paradigms like this permeate the game, and we strive to be flexible in terms of which player she wants to play with in her group.
PN: A lot of the immersion in these sports games is in the details, but can you tell us a little bit about the audio enhancements players can expect in Super Mega Baseball 4?
Audio was usually done by partner teams in previous super mega games. This is the first time we’ve done audio in-house, and we’ve woven our audio aspirations into the game’s entire creative process from the very beginning. The amount of content you can do in this game is huge compared to previous games and there are all sorts of things. 3, the names of the core Super Mega Players were announced. Legends has it too, but I think there are actually thousands of names to choose from, as with all the customized player names you can choose from – all of which are announced in-game. So from a customization perspective, it’s pretty cool.We got a custom soundtrack built for the game. For this game there are 15 completely original tracks made in the spirit of this game. It’s trying to bring a little bit of metal back to ‘metalhead’, but it actually touches quite a few genres. I believe there are about 88 songs in the game. All have been carefully selected from the foundational libraries that EA has granted access to. There are hundreds of new audio clips of spectators making acerbic comments about what’s going on on the field. There’s also a GTA-style radio DJ running you through the front end. How can we continue to build this fictional world while still bringing new players into it? Super Mega Baseball 4 is the first to do just that in a unique way.
PN: For those unfamiliar with the game’s “deck building”, can you explain what it does and how it’s utilized in Super Mega Baseball 4?
One of the key features is a new feature called Shuffle Draft. It’s kind of like deck building, it’s a board game-inspired way of putting together a team, and you can source players like Legends, Super Classic/Super Mega Players, etc. Basically, you draft a team, You can redraft an entire week from a configurable pool of players and then bring that league into one of the other game modes. If you’ve been a fan of the game for a long time, you can take a sirloin and bring in Legends as a free agent for that franchise, starting in the Legends League and most recently he played for MLB Legends’ team Empire, Super can bring his mega baseball player. There is so much flexibility when it comes to playing different parts of the game, different combinations of legends, classic/super mega players and customized players all. So I try to stick to a lot of my roots and do it thoughtfully in a way that feels like a super megagame.
PN: I recall that in Super Mega Baseball 3, the park had day and night lighting settings, but I didn’t realize it was dynamic or changed throughout the game. Was that the case with Super Mega Baseball 4?
I thought about dynamic lighting, but came up with a performance trade-off. Watch Super Mega Baseball 3 and you’ll see that we’ve picked the most epic time of the day. A big effort from a stadium perspective in Super Mega Baseball 4 was trying to get as many stadiums as there were teams in the core league. In previous games, each team had its own home stadium, but in this match it wasn’t enough. We are so excited that every team has their own home stadium for the first time. We think per ballpark he’s stuck with three picks a day and those are given like a pretty big upgrade and look better than ever.
PN: What’s next for the development team? Any DLC or additional updates planned for Super Mega Baseball 4?
We’ll look at how we’ve done that in previous games. We’ll see how people feel about the game, but I’m not going to announce anything specific after launch. increase.
PN: Good. Thank you for your time, Scott!
