The baby-boomer shooter genre got a little bigger today with its early access release. surprise (opens in new tab)a game that started as a complete transformation of Doom, has evolved into a standalone shooter built on the GZDoom engine by members of the Doom modding community.
Supplice’s story is very similar to Doom. Humanity is developing technology that allows them to travel to the stars, but unfortunately the galaxy is not an overly welcoming place. Exocolony Methuselah has been attacked by terrifying alien creatures. It’s up to you to get rid of them or wipe them out.
Mateusz Filipek, marketing manager at Supplice publisher Hyperstrange, said: “Our story sets the stage for everything else in this game to shine. Polished retro-style graphics, classic level design full of environmental storytelling, and other fan-favorite The shooter references are just a few of the things old-school FPS fans can do. Looking forward to it!”
I don’t know if I’d call the premise of games like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D “genius”, but the simplicity is when you just want to move a few big guns to transform a bunch of interstellar goons. can be a strength. Sticky paste. Supplice definitely follows that tradition. I played the first level and it looks a lot like OG Doom. That means it’s fast, chunky, and tough. Even with the “Normal” difficulty setting, I was kicked in the butt several times when I carelessly rushed into an area infested with monsters.
One of my potential criticisms at this very early stage (not really a “criticism” as it’s very early on, but it’s something I’ve noticed) is that for this type of game the map design is a little too big and might be complicated. The problem was exacerbated by the fact that there are no jumps so you can’t climb over obstacles and have to find your way around them.
To be fair, I didn’t spend an hour on Suplis. This isn’t enough time to make a full judgment about it, as we didn’t get a particularly cool gun.
Supplice’s Early Access release includes the first of six planned episodes. It consists of 5 “extremely extensive” maps and a final boss fight. The developer believes it will take him 2.5 hours to he 4.5 hours to finish, “depending on the player’s approach and the difficulty chosen.” Created content, including several fan-made maps already available.
