A bargain from the latest Xbox sales
Heidi — Children of Morta
Children of Morta is a true gem of an indie game. It’s an action-RPG with roguelite elements, where corruption is slowly spreading across the world, and only the Bergson family, Mounthis Guardians of Morta, stand in their way. Children of Morta focuses on the bond between members of this family. Love for each other, frustrations, hopes and fears for the future. Each member of the family has their own skills, strengths, and weaknesses, and snapshots of Bergson’s family life are interspersed between dungeon runs. One of the great things about Children of Morta is that you can see if you have hours, or if you only have 10 minutes. There’s a rich story there, but it’s told simply, so you can come back a while and not feel like you’ve forgotten all the important stuff. You can get souvenirs and new lore. Gradually decorating these souvenirs in Bergson’s home is a great way to quickly catch up on what you’ve been up to. If you missed this game while waiting for Xbox Game Pass or a sale, 65% off is a pretty good deal for such a lovely game. Estimated completion time is around 20-25 hours so less than £7 You can play quite a few games on.

Luke — The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor
Metronomicon is basically rock band Blitz or Amplitude layered with some RPG elements, but I’m fine with that. As a fusion of rhythm action and RPG mechanics, it also shares similarities with Square’s theater rhythm games. Considering they’re great, and the Theater Rhythm final bar line rudely skipping the Xbox, I’m totally fine with it too. Like separate lanes for each instrument in Blitz and Amplitude, each character in the party has its own note chart, but it’s not clearly defined. As in these games, finishing a passage in one lane temporarily removes that lane, so you’ll need to use bumpers to jump between characters to keep everyone active. And here comes the RPG element. A little further in the game, you unlock more powerful abilities for your hero, hitting all the notes on the track before he can activate these abilities by proceeding to the second section. This introduces a strategic element to combat… do you want to take the risk and use a 2nd or 3rd tier ability? Do you have to compromise on abilities? Once you’ve settled on a party dynamic you like, you’ll eventually fall into a set of rotations that works for you, but there are buffs, debuffs, effects, and gauges to follow while you’re trying. It’s a bit challenging at first because there are so many. You can also check up to 4 note charts.
Many of The Metronomicon’s achievements are simply tied to the progression of what is called a story, when in reality they are nothing more than song lists by area, including boss tracks, reserved for shortcut scenes. Others, however, are more challenging, with powered-up heroes, better gear, solid team synergy and rotation to get you through the tough stuff, and tenacious endurance to get you through playlists and endless stuff. I’ve had my eye on this for a while, so the 80% discount (which also applies to the Deluxe Edition, which comes with tons of extra tracks) means it’s time to dive in and I really enjoying it so far.

Sean — Frostpunk: The Complete Collection
My pick for this week is Frostpunk: Complete Collection. why? Because I love playing the role of a terrifying tyrant in video games. I have. Frostpunk is a social survival game in which the planet has mysteriously frozen. You, the leader, are tasked with saving perhaps the last civilization from disappearing. You must build cities, research new technologies, and explore the wider world while keeping your inhabitants from freezing and solving social problems that arise. This is a delicate balancing act that requires a lot of attention and complex decision-making to progress. We have no qualms about running constant emergency shifts in the system, or using the bodies of our loved ones as fertilizer and food to sustain our society. I promise I’m actually a nice guy, but in video games being a dick can be a lot of fun sometimes. But I feel like I’ll let you go…
At just $13.49/£11.17/€13.49, Frostpunk: The Complete Collection is the bargain of the week. The Complete Collection includes the base game and 3 DLC expansions (On the Edge, The Last Autumn, The Rifts). What are Frostpunk’s achievements? Good luck. In total, all the DLC expansions see well over 200 hours and multiple playthroughs on shatter difficulty settings. But don’t be offended. Frostpunk is a great management game worth watching.

The acclaimed social survival game now in a complete collection granting access to the full game and all DLC.
Tom — Child of Light/Recfest
Surprisingly, there weren’t that many deals I played this week. I love both games, but Wreckfest is available on Xbox Game Pass and Child of Light is my favourite. I decided to mix it up and give both games a short shoutout here this week Wreckfest is now on his 60% discount as a permanent fixture in the library during Game Pass Worth getting. This is my favorite racing game and it simulates the feel of a banger race perfectly. I have participated in some real banger races.
Child of Light, on the other hand, is a game I’ve endorsed over and over again, and for good reason. It comes from Ubisoft’s version of her, which explored new game concepts and took risks, but as the company has grown, this gem seems to have been left in the past: trapped in a fairy tale world. A story about a girl named Aurora trying to escape. When not competing in turn-based combat, her characters all rhyme, and the overall feel of the game is light and very entertaining, although she’s not available on Child of Light’s list of achievements. There is one. If you get it on sale, keep that in mind.
