Hello everyone. He is Matthieu Richez, CEO and Creative Director of Ishtar Games. We are very excited to announce that our tactical roguelite game, The Last Spell, will be available on PS5 and PS4 in early 2023!
But first, let me introduce you to this dark, painful and gritty game world we created…
A few years ago, The Last Spell was just an idea in my head, and I passed it on to Art Director Jacques Dedeken. It’s an asymmetric tactical game where a few heroes fight hundreds of monsters. This led to the first-ever concept his art for this game.
In 2022, the game has been significantly refined, especially during Early Access, which launched in 2021. With all this time, care and help from our players, we were able to use more maps and provide the best possible game for all users. , more ideas and more possibilities.
tactical and roguelite
The final spell hasn’t changed much from the original idea given to Jack. A hero must protect Heaven from many monsters. During the day you can patch your heroes, buy weapons and build buildings, but at night you have to fight.
Each map has a different number of knights and your only goal is to stay alive as long as possible. The longer your hero lives and fights, the more you unlock new weapons, armor, passives and bonuses for your next run.
During the night, monsters overwhelm you and want you to push yourself to your limit with every run. This feeling is heightened by the work of Rémi Gallego (The Algorithm), the composer behind The Last Spell’s stunning metal soundtrack.
The final spell is tactical, with each hero having unique action points, moves, and mana. One mistake can put your hero in immediate danger of death…and I speak from experience.
We spent a lot of time designing the control scheme for The Last Spell. This is because we tried to find the best possible way to play games with the PlayStation controller. For example, we designed the system so that you can use the right stick to quickly move around the interface. We also made the combat phases play faster and smoother. Another important point was to have a dedicated button to display a tooltip. Because this is the main way to give the player information about something.
Last spell to save the world
The world of The Last Spell is a bittersweet one. A magical war has destroyed everything, and a few shelters still stand among the ruins. As if that wasn’t enough, a dangerous mist rises every night, bringing terrifying monsters to the walls.
Hopefully you have a way to save the world. Or humanity has one. Cast the final spell, a powerful spell that banishes all magic in the world, destroying mists and monsters in the process.
To do so, each remaining Haven must break its seal, and the Hero’s only goal is to protect the Mage at all costs. Failure to do so will lead to their doom and defeat. This can also be translated as “I need to start a new run”.
Other tools useful in combat
Defending each Haven is tough, but you have multiple tools at your disposal to help you succeed. The greatest of them all are mystical beings of light and darkness.
Thanks to them, battles among the Knights give access to unique boons: some can be purchased with Tainted Essence, others can be unlocked through a series of completions. gives you an advantage in the future. Start small and the fight gets easier as you unlock tools… until you reach new deadly challenges.
By killing monsters, heroes can level up, improve their attributes, and learn new passive or active perks. The pool of perks available to heroes is randomized, so each hero has a different set of perks that can be unlocked.
All heroes in The Last Spell are classless, meaning their skills change depending on the weapon they give. You can try everything with your hero and adapt your strategy. If something doesn’t work, change it and choose something else.
Thank you for reading my blog post. We are so excited to see new players fly around The Last Spell. Release on PS5 and PS4 is his early 2023!
