If you asked me last week if I wanted to live in a house built on rock carved to look like a giant’s skull, I would say “No, I don’t” and spend a few hours wondering what the problem was. It must have been. . why are you asking me that? It’s a very strange way to start a conversation.
But after seeing Enshrouded’s voxel-based building tools, upcoming co-op survival RPG developer Keen Games explains: Valheim meets Zelda, I have to admit… Yes, I would love to live in a house built on a rock that looks like a giant’s skull. And I apologize for criticizing your question so harshly. It wasn’t cool to me.
Enshrouded is entering early access on Steam Later this year, you’ll explore a dangerous realm where a deadly fog has crept in and covered nearly everything, mutating creatures trapped within and spawning hideous monsters. The only safe zone is on a mountaintop that rises above the fog, where you build your home base and create a place to relax when you’re not fighting the evil beings hiding in your shroud.
I’m definitely into slaying monsters, exploring the world, and using grappling hooks and wingsuits to get around. But what interests me the most is the base building system. Construction is completely free-form, allowing you to shape every corner of the base or use ready-made templates to build floors, walls, and other structures. With a voxel system, walls, columns and floors can be smoothed together and everything looks beautiful and seamless. Also, once you build something, you can change it as you like.
Here the system looks very flexible and you can see windows added to the walls by simply subtracting small blocks from the surface. What’s especially nice is that the creation tools seem to be able to tell if you’re creating something like an arrow slit, a window, or a doorway by how to quickly style the opening you just created. A window looks like a window, and a doorway looks like a doorway. It’s impressive and gives me hope that my base might end up looking better even though I’m not much of a builder. Check out his Enshrouded building and terraforming gameplay video below to get an idea of what I’m talking about.
It’s not just buildings that are made of voxels, it’s everything. Want to tunnel through a mountainside? Grab your pickaxe and start swinging. Want to add a basement under your castle? Start building walls by carving out all the rocks and dirt and decorate it however you like. I’m already itching to build a cool castle with a dungeon under it, but the game hasn’t been released yet.
Your base is not only for you and your friends, but also for NPCs. During your adventure, you’ll meet characters such as hunters, blacksmiths, and alchemists. Once you’ve rescued them from the Shroud, you can build rooms for them in your base, place workbenches and other items for them, and summon them with your magic wand. They will then live there with you, help you with crafting, and give you quests to complete.
Everything looks so good to me. If you like building cozy strongholds in Valheim or Minecraft, Enshrouded is definitely one of his games to watch. No specific release date has been set yet, but For more information, please visit the official website.
