I am very happy to report that scarlet hollow, one of my favorite games of the last few years, somehow keeps getting better and better. Episode 4 is out now, and it’s the biggest, most elaborate, and most selective part to date. And this time the story is plump.

To catch up with everyone: scarlet hollow first chapter (it’s free nowof Creepy Tales) was released. Outside the gate, it presented some extraordinary narrative ballets. You play the character who, after the death of her aunt, heads to the small Southern town of Scarlett her Hollow, ostensibly to attend her funeral. When you arrive, you meet your ferocious cousin Tabitha, who is staying with you, and then a group of other local twenty-somethings who you’ve befriended. You are soon drawn into a miserable adventure with disturbing creatures in the woods, suspiciously acting locals, and a hunch that something is wrong. very Wrong in town (Read my original review For more information. )
From the first moment you choose who you are and two of the seven defining personality traits, you are uniquely carving out a path for everything that comes your way. Either be smart or book incredibly smart. You can gain a keen eye, or… extra perception of the ability to talk to animals. And from the beginning, start deciding how you will interact at any given point in time. This takes us through a macabre tale of forest horror and impending doom, defined by the relationships we form, the places we visit, and the people we betray.

I’ve played so many games over the years that promised the above, but very few have delivered. However scarlet hollow is a paragon, a game that truly understands that the trick is to allow players to experience the core story path in their own way, rather than trying to create an infinite number of story paths. .and go to chapter 4 so This allows us to not only carry over all the decisions and relationships from the previous three episodes, but build on them to make some very important decisions about how things go.
You’ll notice the deliberate ambiguity here, as reviewing a game in the middle of its seven planned chapters is no easy task. Literally everything is spoilers, not only in the sense that I open the book halfway through and start reading, but also in the sense that I acknowledge the characters that are still around.
Instead, we speak more broadly. A lot of friendships have been made and lost in this latest and greatest chapter, and with the core story elements already laid out, you can really get things going. It’s a place that leans more towards horror, but it’s the first time you’ll be able to participate in one of five possible romance options. This is a nice contrast.
It’s only been four days since you came to this town, many It happened to you and your group of friends.Ann terrible At the end of Chapter 3, if you make certain game-changing decisions, you can do a lot. So even if you can tell your character of choice that you’re into it, it doesn’t feel rushed or forced. In fact, you are most welcome. Don’t tell anyone that. On the other hand, fears are also surprisingly diverse given the way we approach things.
I hate watching multiple paths on purpose, preferring to just play to save my experience. They were bluffs back to the same course. They weren’t bluffing. An unbelievably horrifying occurrence happened on a side road that I had safely saved beforehand. I played through the entire chapter and saw even more changes when I changed how Chapter 3 ended. Ultimately it’s the same game with the same scenes in a similar order, but what changes dramatically is how you perceive them.
For a game played by narrative choice, Chapter 4 accomplishes something incredible. Despite being able to click through the dialogue at my own pace, I found myself frantically speeding through the points, being chased, frantically searching for a route to safety! In places, depending on how you finished the previous chapter, the game would like to limit your choices and reverse this feeling, slowing things down somehow so you don’t miss an element.
I’m crazy about the complexity scarlet hollow It creates a story that makes you forget to talk about its art. But this is still stunning, with every scene hand-drawn, and while it doesn’t boast Chapter 3’s amazing animated dream art, it’s far more detailed and stunning in scenes we barely got a glimpse of while playing. It’s great that the small team behind this project can get more ambitious with each chapter.
feel like scarlet hollow shows that the visual novel format is just a foundation upon which something better can be built. The screenshots may look like a standard VN, but the game itself is not just a balance between RPG-like systems and ridiculously complex choices, but a much better deal of scale, time, and importance. Much better by feel. Over and over again I was overwhelmed.
