Neil Gaiman’s Netflix adaptation this week Sandman debut. The adaptation of the legendary comic has come a long, long way, and Gaiman’s involvement helped keep the adaptation true to his intentions while making some key changes.
Now that the series is complete, is there a better time to celebrate Gaiman’s work? Introduce (for something more, see Sandman– specifically, here are my favorite stories from comics).
While there is the question of whether Sandman Neil Gaiman’s best work is a matter of debate, but I think it’s many Artwork by Neil Gaiman. This, as my colleague Susana Polo eloquently explains, Sandman Not only was it a once-in-a-lifetime moment in the history of comics publishing, but it was the product of a young, ambitious writer who put all his creative passion into his work, fearing he might never have such an opportunity again. .
The result was not only one of the biggest cult hits in superhero comics (if not the biggest), but also a primer for the type of story Gaiman would continue to write for the rest of his career.Fighting gods and modern anthropomorphic aspects american gods? it’s in SandmanUrban fantasy elements and far-flung lore Nowhere When stardust? it’s in SandmanWhimsical Horror Humor Coraline? Sandman. If nothing else, Sandman It’s the perfect entry point for potential readers to familiarize themselves with Neil Gaiman’s particular writing style. Sandman It feels like the original text for every story Gaiman might want to write in the future.Toussaint Egan
good omen One piece of pop culture I’ve heard of, but never fully knew what it was. Written by both Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, good omen Somehow transforming the apocalypse into a witty and engaging meditation on the joys of mankind.
At its core is Aziraphale and the angel-demon Crowley who have been in and out of each other’s lives over the past millennia, and as such, have grown to like each other and live on Earth. The boss really hopes that the end of the world has already begun, but they team up to prevent the apocalypse from happening.
The TV version, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant, is equally enjoyable, further fleshing out the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. Gaiman has a lot of input and I hope it holds up as it incorporates some of the sequels he and his Pratchett couldn’t write —Petrana Radulovic
Gaiman is, if nothing else, a versatile writer. In addition to comics and novels, he’s written works as diverse as one of his most beloved episodes. Doctor Who Studio Ghibli English script Princess MononokeBut for my money, nothing Gaiman does better than short stories.
First published in 1998, smoke and mirrors Readers can find erotica, Christmas cards, dreamy science fiction, fairytale retellings, deconstructions of great fantasy writers, and even a bit of poetry. But most of all, they discover Gaiman’s flair for short fantastical horror threads that reel you in, and if you can’t hear the Cryptkeeper croaking from afar, you probably don’t. Pay attention. —Susana Polo
my Favorite Trivia Facts stardust Neil Gaiman and Diana Wynne Jones once compared notes from John Donne’s “Song,” and Gaiman wrote in response to the poem. stardust wrote Jones howl’s moving castle.
Both the original novel and the movie version stardust Playing with fairy tale conventions (in a similar way howl’s moving castle To do). It follows Tristran Thorne (Tristan in the movie) who promises to get a shooting star for the most beautiful girl in the village, only to find out that the shooting star is actually a stubborn young woman. There are fairies, witches and pirates on the ship. It’s a fun chat and a compelling romance. And somehow the movie version managed to capture the magic, but with some changes to make it more cinematic and give it a happier ending.
But the original book’s ending, one of the most poignant and bittersweet I’ve ever read, holds a special place in my heart for how desolate it feels. —public relations
Coraline A masterpiece of children’s horror. I can still remember when I found the book at my local library. I was judging the book entirely by its cover. Little did I know how strongly this iconography would haunt me for weeks to come. It also made a young Neil Gaiman fan.
I couldn’t remember the last time I read a book so quickly. Conceit is truly terrifying, even if you’re an adult, and incredibly relatable as a child. : spirited away), Coraline It stars a young girl who wishes her life was a little different after moving into a new house. She crawls through a tiny door into an alternate universe where she meets her other mother who makes her favorite foods and lets her have the adventures she really wants.Catch ? she can’t leave Also, like all residents of this universe, her eyes are replaced with buttons.
Excellent cinematography as well. By a beautiful coincidence, I was just hooked on stop motion. Coraline Adopted by animation studio Laika (years later they made Kubo and two strings, an absolute marvel of animation).Director Selick Coraline The movie is whimsical, wonderful, and most importantly, absolutely terrifying. It’s all I ever wanted, now and always. —Nicole Clark
2012 Make Good Art Commencement Speech
In 2012, I was in my junior year of college, nearing the end of my education and about to launch a career in a volatile industry. This commencement speech I stumbled upon after a friend shared it on her Facebook and it had a huge positive impact on me at a time when I needed a boost.
Worth the whole thing, but worth highlighting one part in particular.
People continue to work in the freelancing world, and more and more people are freelancing in today’s world. This is because their work is excellent, they are easy to get along with, and they are able to deliver work on time. Also, you don’t need all three. Two thirds is fine. If your work is good and you deliver it on time, people will tolerate how uncomfortable you are. If things go well and they like you, they will forgive you for being late. You don’t have to be as good as others if you’re on time. It’s always nice to hear from you.
It’s a valuable life lesson, especially as work creeps up more and more into every part of our lives. — Pete Volk
his Tumblr presence
Before I go any further — yes, People still use Tumblr and it is much more popular than most people think.Neil Gaiman has been an active Tumblr user since 2011 and still actively uses the microblogging platform. I’m here. This is notable because celebrities are notoriously bullied by Tumblr.

Neil Gaiman? what are you doing with my falafel
I can’t help but mention an episode of the PBS Kids series Arthur Neil Gaiman comes to advise Sue Ellen on writing her own graphic novel. In her episode, she meets Gaiman (at least his Arthur Sona, Cat) at her book reading and he gives her a copy of her book Coraline graphic novel. When she tries to write her own book and is discouraged by her friends’ feedback and her own self-doubt, a fictional version of Gaiman appears to give her good advice! It’s an episode, but it also offers Neil Gaiman’s hilarity as a little cat sitting on a falafel.public relations
