In August 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery was still a newly merged organization, and executives were making many decisions about current and future content on the Max platform, then still called HBO Max. Two events happened very close together. Despite filming wrapping up and starring a fan-favorite cast like Brendan Frazier and Michael Keaton, the studio suddenly canned Batgirl. At the same time, Ezra Miller’s ongoing legal troubles also came to a head. When Miller entered therapy, rumors began circulating that her superhero movie would be cancelled.
Asked directly if there was a “legitimate fear that the film would be canceled,” Mukieti replied, “Absolutely not. It never happened.”
Miller has been arrested multiple times in Hawaii in April 2022, including being a minor (now an adult, say it’s a lie). They also pleaded guilty to trespassing in Vermont, and a video of them strangling a woman in an Icelandic bar has gone viral. Since then, the Mukieti brothers and DC Studios executives have been vocal in their support for Miller’s recovery.
The Flash, starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Sasha Cole, Ben Affleck and Michael Shannon, hits theaters June 16.
