fairy tale
Episode 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 begins with an urgent phone call in the middle of the night in June. I’m Lily. The Guardian has encountered important information. Moira and Luke also join and travel together. Border patrols are intensified and friendly forces are found stranded in No Man’s Land.
With no other choice, Luke decides to find out about Hannah on his own. June decides to go with him. Moira definitely isn’t, given that she still needs someone to care for Nicole, and although she doesn’t have a name because she’s dangerous to meet, she heads to Gilead again with a command word and instructions. Of course, this brings back painful memories of when Hannah had her arm ripped off years ago, but June still pushes all the same.
Meanwhile, Serena awkwardly enjoys the hospitality from the Wheelers. Serena says she doesn’t allow “rules to get in God’s way”, so she plans to open another center.
Warren and Joseph both called Serena, the former unhappy with her bad press after the center closed. They should focus on fertility and babies instead. Warren is unsatisfied and eventually hangs up. Warren doesn’t want Gilead to open up to the world, but Lawrence is quick to point out that if they don’t open the door, at least to take a peek, their country will die.
June and Luke eventually find their contact, but he urges them to follow him. He takes the pair to an abandoned bowling alley and gives them his USB with the necessary details. Details are unknown, but footage of Hannah has been found. The man advises us to wait until sunset before he returns to the border as it is not safe right now. Luke conceded and the pair decided to stick around and bowl for a bit.
Aunt Lydia shows up at the Wheeler mansion, where the gates are locked and Selina can’t leave. Anyway, she has an entire handmade batch to organize. It seems she’s starting to realize how powerless she really is, and how Canada has changed her view. Serena is basically under house arrest (in a roundabout way) and told to stay inside the house.
Meanwhile, Luke and June begin their way back through the woods, but unfortunately Gilead’s contact causes him to step on a mine, blowing his leg off. The pair decide to help him by putting a tourniquet on his wound, but as he starts screaming in the woods, a torchlight dances on the horizon. . Unfortunately, they were stopped on a public road and captured.
episode review
This episode could have actually been 20 minutes long. After June, this has little substance, with Luke going to meet their contact and inevitably being captured, and Serena finding out stranded and powerless in Gilead. Nonetheless, the drama here is completely dragged out.
Of course, it’s the mainstay of this entire series, and there are too many chapters to tell the story. That will be interesting! Hopefully this is just a moment and the rest of the season is on track.
