The Knight Witch is a fast-paced and extremely fun metroidvania/shooter game. You play the role of Rain, a knight-witch in training. The action takes place in an underground city known as Danzionidas. The story creates a unique world using stunning graphics that reflect the land where witches and monsters are fighting. You are helping fight the golems that are trying to take over. Rain must rise up to avenge her family and the city.
The gameplay is fun and works really well both handheld and docked. It usually flies in tight areas in 2D levels, but its controls are very sensitive and you can dodge attacks quickly. Bosses can be daunting to fight with huge enemies, but the controls are so sharp that you can pull off some nifty maneuvers and tricky shots.
The rain is always flying and floating, which makes the game fun. Additionally, it constantly fires magic bullets from its wand and occasionally unleashes spells that do more damage. Traditional attacks can always use staff ammo, but spells must be recharged. Anyway, the game has a very Metroid feel to it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Due to the limited space, you have to move very quickly, but it’s rewarding once you get used to the controls and the flow of the game.
Graphics are great. Although 2D, Knight Witch is packed with creative details that introduce you to this whole new world. The creators have gone to great lengths not only when it comes to backgrounds, but also enemy details. The hand-drawn style is unique and not found in many titles, especially shooters. I really felt like I had a great feel for the world. After defeating it, I was annoyed that there were no more levels.
Night Witch has great graphics, but it would occasionally glitch and freeze. I was annoyed. On top of that, the game suddenly becomes very difficult for certain bosses. The first boss I encountered took almost a dozen tries. Other bosses were equally difficult. I understand that bosses should be harder, but this drastic change in difficulty is not what I expected, especially when the health bar in the first stage is still very low. No. If I hadn’t played for this review, I would have given up after my tenth loss.
Difficulty and glitches aside, Knight Witch is a highly enjoyable game with a unique and creative world that I have never experienced before. I hope to play the sequel and explore more levels of the dungeon land. The developers at Team17 have done a great job with this world as I thoroughly enjoyed the game.
