The cinematographer of HBO’s The Last of Us series has shared behind-the-scenes photos and images from the wildly popular third episode, “Long Long Night.” Eben Bolter shared an incredibly engaging look at the episode that was engaging and emotional, and confirmed, among other details, that HBO basically built an entire town for the episode. .
One of Bolter’s images also shows the exact latitude and longitude of the scene in question, which it claims is “10 miles west of Boston.” These particular geo-positioning details make it clear that this scene wasn’t actually filmed near Boston.
In fact, we know it was taken based on the coordinates Bolter provided in one of the behind-the-scenes images. Near Sheep River Falls, Kananaskis, Alberta, CanadaIt’s a very luxurious, quiet, peaceful place, but not near Boston. In reality, this scene was filmed over 2,000 miles west of Boston. Locals shared some excellent memes about Boston’s geography and lack of a Dunkin’ Donuts scene, and Stephen King even got in on the action. Much more typical New England than that.
Other details from the behind-the-scenes thread include that the town Bill (Nick Offerman) lives in was an actual site laid out for new development before being abandoned. . Then the art department got to work and built the entire town. TRUE. “Every house, fence, lamppost, everything in sight was the art department,” Bolter said.
The house is a shell, the interior of which was built over a soundstage. However, a corner of Bill and Frank’s house was filmed on location to help with one scene. Bolter said the VFX team also deserves a lot of credit for putting things in order.
Another trivia to know is that The Last of Us art department made one of Bill’s traps out of cement. In fact, Bill’s actor Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, developer) did at least some of the work. A cameraman named Neil Bryant stayed inside the hole as Bill filmed the scene of sealing the trap. According to Bolter, Offerman jokingly said to Byrant, “F**k you, Neal.”

All right, it’s Billstown. We found a strip of bare asphalt that had been laid for new development before it was abandoned, creating the perfect platform for building the town. pic.twitter.com/H0UmIyklbO

Every house, fence, lamppost, everything in sight was the art department. The house was made of cannonballs and the interior was built on the soundstage except for the front and one corner of Bill and Frank’s house so the fire scene could be captured in one shot. The VFX was a nice finishing touch. pic.twitter.com/Z2OP9EXu3r

No corners cut. The art department made his one of Bill’s traps cement safe for the cast and crew. Little trivia: Shot of Bill sealing the trap, cameraman Neil Bryant was filmed inside the hole and when Nick sealed the hole he whispered softly out of the mud: “F**k you, Neal”🤣 pic.twitter.com/7DnO35AWnk

For the raider’s attack, we took Frank downstairs, into the dining room, out of the building, and back in, shooting one continuous handheld shot. As for the moonlight, I wanted fire instead, so I requested SFX rain with lightning strikes to amplify the chaos. pic.twitter.com/8wxbkea9Ft

strawberry. This is an exquisite director planning a jog to the final position. Orange strings are plotted on the ground where the house will be built, but the main purpose of this was to determine where the strawberry fields would be relative to the magic hour sun. pic.twitter.com/yRFQqFf8xR
