The Legend of Gwen is a 3D platformer from WiwiGameStudio. You play as Gwen, a pretty witch who tries to bring back the “evil” that disrupted her welcome party at the Wizarding School. Each level has a fun design featuring spooky backgrounds that are perfect for this witch story. You must search for her five stars in each level before finding the exit while avoiding spiders, ghosts and other creepy monsters trying to stop you.
The game has a Minecraft-like feel when it comes to graphics, but the 3D platforming reminds me of some games on the N64. The stage design is creative, but navigating these roles can be a little tricky.
Start the game with a witch in the background and give commands to jump, double jump, etc. Generally with such a busy background I had to try a few times before resorting to these notes. It was very close to game over before getting control in and out. For a 3D platformer, it had to be very precise. It reminded me of several stages in Mario 64, in the middle of fighting Bowser.
In addition to the controls, the game itself is difficult. While playing this (my 2 year old daughter loved the scenery of the game), I was shocked at how difficult the cute witches were. It was very difficult. It was difficult to be that precise, especially in handheld mode on the Switch, so I think they took a little more time to make the game easier, or at least smoother.
Again, the level designs and characters were fun and creative. I like this world and am curious if there is a sequel. I think Gwen and this world will be a fun, in-depth story, but the game isn’t the finished product. There’s a lot of potential for a good game here, but unfortunately it hasn’t fully materialized yet.I thought Gwen would be a fun, lighthearted platformer with a whimsical world and fun spells has become one of the most difficult games I’ve reviewed in recent times.
As I said earlier, I think that this world view and story development have potential. A fun and cute platformer featuring witches like Gwen has definitely won an audience in the gaming space. That said, it’s extremely difficult, and it doesn’t fit the world view or the story. Looking forward to playing this remake of the game to see smoother transitions, easier levels and better controls. Once those are worked out, I think this could be a big game.
