Nier: Automata’s anime adaptation takes place on January 7, 2023, and to celebrate the release of a lovely new trailer, it will see protagonists 2B and 9S take on post-apocalyptic robot jobs in a post-apocalyptic robot future. I knew it was coming in January (opens in new tab) It’s been a while, but this is the first hard date we’ve had.
The trailer makes it look like it faithfully recreated at least the first round of Nier: Automata’s storyline. Some of them took years for the player base to discover, while the last significant one appeared four years after its release. (opens in new tab) I mean, I doubt we’ll see this series stick to an established ending. Expect very metafictional twists and deviations.
Like halfway through the series, they start making the game and send the code back to 2017 for Yoko Taro and Platinum Games to get credit for it. Just spit here.
The anime will appear on streaming platform Crunchyroll around the world, and will appear on Hulu and Amazon Prime in many territories.
Nier: Automata was one of the most critically acclaimed games of the last decade, and while it was very well received when it was released in 2017, it has become a cult favorite in the years since. Set on a devastated Earth where humanity has fled, the last survivors of our species live in space and send soldiers to the surface to fight. Our Tom Sr. called him one of the saddest games ever made (opens in new tab) At the time.
“Humanity has been driven from Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a last-ditch effort to reclaim Earth, the human resistance sends a force of android soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now the war between machines and androids is raging…a war that could soon reveal the truth of a long-forgotten world,” says the game’s official description.
Anyway, get ready for an exciting release in 2023. That’s just one of the reasons why people love Nier. (opens in new tab) You can play as her in basically everything, so maybe we’ll add more 2B skins. (opens in new tab)
