Has there ever been a GPU generation with hotly debated and rumored specs like Nvidia’s RTX 40 series? (opens in new tab)? No, I didn’t. The upcoming lineup of graphics cards has changed countless times over the past year. However, with the potential launch window fast approaching, we’re starting to see the final shape of these cards, and there may be a few different memory configurations along the way.
We expect the RTX 4090 to lead the charge for the RTX 40 series, which will likely come standard with 24GB of GDDR6X memory. This is not particularly groundbreaking information as the current generation of his RTX 3090/Ti also comes with similar features.
But it’s an RTX 4080. (opens in new tab) It’s likely to be a more interesting sight when it’s released, but it’s not entirely clear when that will be. MEGA size GPU (opens in new tab) (via video cards (opens in new tab)), and if you need one graphics card, you may find two. The RTX 4080 is rumored to come in two different memory configurations, 12GB GDDR6X or 16GB GDDR6X.
Even more surprising is that these are said to be radically different graphics cards. The 16GB variant is reported to use a 12-layer PCB while the 12GB variant is reported to use a 10-layer PCB. And the two are said to arrive at the same time.
Nvidia has offered such a split in the past, but arguably it makes more sense at the more entry-level market with the GTX 1060 6GB/3GB. You’ll feel a little more certain of things.
The competition does something for graphics card companies, but just as Nvidia has come up with ideas for multiple memory configurations and power caps to ensure it covers all bases.AMD has RDNA 3 GPUs it’s getting hot in (opens in new tab) This year we expect Nvidia to cater to the RX 7000 series at all performance levels.

Nvidia has tested the waters with multiple memory configurations for their GPUs and isn’t afraid to ditch them anytime soon. Remember the number of RTX 3080/Ti memory configurations (opens in new tab) had long been rumored rear that release? At the time, we heard from one GPU manufacturer that they were very close to finalizing their own design before canning his one of these unreleased configurations.
We saw one such memory configuration in the 12GB variant later in the RTX 3080’s lifespan. (opens in new tab)so such a release for the RTX 40 series is also absolutely possible.
I think the chances of these two RTX 4080 variants hitting the market at launch are just as good as the other rumored specs of the RTX 40 series see the light of day.
But at least we won’t have to wait too long to mention next-gen GeForce GPUs. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is hosting the company’s keynote at his GTC conference in September.exterior (opens in new tab) at that event.
