In the story of One Piece Odyssey, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates were caught in a huge storm at sea and shipwrecked on the mysterious island of Waford. One Piece Odyssey is an all-new turn-based RPG featuring new character and monster designs produced by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda.
At the preview held the other day, “One Piece Odyssey” producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki said that the main theme of this work is “a story of bonds spun by memories.” It was also important to the development team to create “an RPG where players can explore and adventure the world of ONE PIECE”.
Today, we are excited to share how players can bond in-game, utilize each character’s unique skills, and immerse themselves in the One Piece world created by Tsuzuki and the rest of the team.
(Beware, pirates, minor story spoilers ahead!)
battle system
First, we’ll talk about the in-game combat system and how the unbreakable bonds forged in combat are essential to defeating your enemies.
Tsuzuki: “In an action game, you have to focus and understand how to control a single character in a single battle in order to get that satisfaction. But One Piece as an IP already has ” There are many attractive characters called Straw Hat Pirates, so we adopted a turn-based command battle for the battle system so that you can enjoy each charm. of our choice. “
Generally, in turn-based RPG games, players set up all their characters and lock them in before taking turns. However, One Piece Odyssey takes a different approach.
Tsuzuki: While adopting rock-paper-scissors elements as a basic tactic, characters are placed randomly in multiple areas. It’s meant to keep you challenged to take down the enemies in front of you, and the system offers a variety of situations to face each time, bringing a fresh perspective to the battles you endure along the way.”
In most combat encounters, the Straw Hats scramble to various combat areas with the enemy, with up to four crew members engaging the enemy while the rest remain in reserve. It can freely change its position as long as there is action left. Enemy placement can be a challenge for your lineup when you’re surrounded by elite Marines rushing with more support-oriented crews. Effect types, bond arts, and potential secondary objectives can be considered in any battle.
Efficacy type
Straw Hat Pirates and enemy NPCs are categorized into Power, Speed, and Technique effect types. Power is more effective against Speed-type enemies and less effective against Technique-type enemies.
Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and a power type. Although as powerful as Luffy, he has a harder time against Technique-type enemies. Let’s rescue Luffy from a pinch with her Lightning Skill!
With up to 9 Straw Hats and 4 head-to-head combat, there’s a lot to experience.
Bond Arts & Memory Links
Now the crew is already strong because everyone has their own strengths. However, since this is a story of bonding, we encourage all players to unleash the full potential of the game with Bond Arts!
Kizuna Arts is the Straw Hat Pirates strongest attack. At the beginning of the story, the Straw Hat Pirates jump into a world called Memoria, a world of memories woven from the memories of the Straw Hat Pirates, in order to regain their lost power. To unlock the Bond Arts, you must discover a lost side quest called Memory Link within Memoria and relive the story of the bond that certain Straw Hats share. Completing these memory links will unlock the kizuna art for free use throughout the game, as long as the straw he hat has the required kizuna level.
A certain bond level is required to activate bond arts, and you can charge the bond level by fighting together. To initiate a Bond Art attack, all Straw Hats involved in the Bond Art must be present, have a sufficiently high bond level, and the initiating Straw Hat must also have an action.
The strength of these attacks makes it worth seeking out these memory links and playing with different lineups of Straw Hats to keep your bond levels up.
Tsuzuki: “Bond Arts is one example of the benefits of utilizing different characters and items, allowing you to choose stronger attacks to defeat your enemies. That’s why we recommend using Memory Links to strengthen your party.” It is recommended.”
dramatic scene
This wouldn’t be One Piece without a bit of drama. We’ve incorporated it into the game as an additional way to level up your team.
Over the course of the game, a dramatic scene system provides random in-battle objectives and provides increased experience, currency, and loot if objectives are achieved. For example, you may need to kill an enemy with a particular straw hat. Even if the crew is weak to effect types. This can make combat harder, but the rewards are worth it!
Other ways to strengthen your team
Outside of combat, the game continues to encourage players to build friendships.
Tsuzuki: Midway through your adventure, you’ll find places where you can camp or have a ‘party’. “
All of the extra loot the Straw Hats earn by overcoming dramatic scene challenges is a key component of cooking, trick ball crafting, and gear enhancements. By making use of the strength of the Straw Hat Pirates’ bonds and converting the rewards into items that greatly affect the battle situation, you will gain momentum to overcome difficulties such as boss battles.
camp & craft
As in any great adventure, when the Straw Hats camp, they spend time resting, having fun, and crafting. During camp, players have the opportunity to find ways to make the most of their resources through cooking, crafting trick balls, and utilizing Nico’s Robin’s Mysteries his craft.
Sanji is the crew’s chef and can make delicious meals to eat in battle. Check out Sanji’s Bronze Bat Soup to heal all allies and grant his 10% bonus to DEF and GUTS.
Straw Hat Pirates sniper Usopp makes a trick ball. These Trick Balls can provide large buffs to your party or large debuffs to your enemies. One Piece Odyssey has strong bosses. Just like in the original, the boss tests the Straw Hat, and the player must work with Usopp to create a trick ball that lowers the enemy’s defense or makes them more susceptible to status ailments.
Device
Straw Hat Pirates archaeologist Nico Robin is the curator of player gear. Each Straw Hat has a grid, and the player builds his crew by freely filling the grid to obtain blocks of cubes with different abilities and stats that the player can find throughout the game. You can strengthen it. Later in the game, Nico Robin could become one of the most popular crew members to spend time with as the story progresses.
Every member of the crew is highly regarded and a vital core to the game and journey with the player. Create memories with the Straw Hat Pirates through the depth and strategic elements of battle.
One Piece Odyssey comes to PS5 and PS4 on January 13, 2023. Pre-order today and embark on an epic adventure with Luffy and the Straw Hats.
