Earlier this year, Zachtronics, an indie studio that specializes in making puzzle games that teach programming languages and teach you a whole new way of thinking, announced that it would be producing one final game. That game is Last Call BBS, an anthology that includes an excellent model robot assembly simulator and another Solitaire variation that has become a studio feature. Zachtronics hasn’t backed out of the “no more new games” part of the deal, but the studio has always planned to follow Last Call BBS by compiling all Solitaire variations as an epilogue of sorts. It has been announced that the Zachtronics Solitaire Collection will be released on Steam next week.
The trailer that accompanies the announcement is embedded above, and it’s the most thrilling Solitaire trailer I’ve ever seen. . “Inside are all 7 of his solitaire games from our company.” Zach Barth of Zachronix says (opens in new tab)“Remastered in 4K graphics, tarot-themed new game has become a new favorite.” Luckily, the YouTube algorithm declared the trailer to be a Microsoft Solitaire Collection video.
The games included are:
- Shenzhen Solitaire: A variation of Solitaire inspired by FreeCell, featuring a three-color deck based on mahjong tiles.
- Sigmar’s Garden: Tile-matching game with alchemical symbols from Opus Magnum
- Patience of the Proletariat: A variation of asymmetric solitaire where some cards are grouped by suit and others are stacked in alternating colors
- Kabufuda Solitaire: A challenging solitaire variant using Japanese Kabufuda cards, with additional free cells unlocked by creating sets
- Cluj Solitaire: The original version of Solitaire where you can “cheat” by placing the cards where you want if you are careful
- Cribbage Solitaire: Score-based solitaire with modified cribbage rules and an actual Cold War era aircraft recognition deck.
- Sawayama Solitaire: A reimagined version of Klondike that’s faster, more strategic, and wins more often than the original
- Fortune’s Foundation: A brand new and highly challenging solitaire variation that uses a deck of tarot cards to bring good luck if you win.
