It’s very rare to find a game so disastrous to get a single-digit rating on Steam. But it certainly happens, as evidenced by O2Jam Online (opens in new tab)last week’s release. Rhythm Game currently has a 4% rating and only 41 or so recommendations out of over 1,000 reviews.
That’s a pretty justified reception too. This series has been pretty much dead for a while. Originally in the 2000s he appeared as a PC game and by 2012 all public servers were closed. Devoted fans have been setting up private his servers ever since, and a few years later a mobile version of him attempted to revive the series. So when the O2Jam Online announcement came out of nowhere, it was a pleasant surprise. My own friends were hyped to see the return of the classic rhythm game, and expectations were high.
oh dear. o2jam Steam has crossed a new line in terms of incompetence.January 20, 2023
Unfortunately, the launch of O2Jam Online has been plagued with some horribly questionable decisions and countless bugs. The game is currently free to play, but players must purchase songs that he can only hold for 7 or 30 days. There’s no option to permanently unlock tracks, and every aspect of the game (including the Note skin) only gives him a week or a month.
Other than shady business practices, reviews lament how the game looks like garbage. It looks like most of the UI has been removed from the mobile version. The resolution is below 1920×1080 and looks terribly blurry on a 1440p monitor. Everything is stretched out, the notes are comically large, and the whole thing is pretty hard to see. I won’t go into the fact that BPM is misspelled as his BMP.
It also has issues desynchronizing the track’s audio, making the song playback very annoying. In my brief time in the game trying to use keybindings similar to those used in fellow rhythm game DJMax Straight Up, I realized it didn’t work. I was able to bind, but it automatically misses when I try to use it. O2Jam is traditionally he’s a 7-button game, with different colored middle buttons to help you keep track of which side the notes are coming from. However, the lack of his tertiary color on the central button has proven the note chart to be unnecessarily difficult to read.
Guys I will cancel o2jam on schedule and replace it with some muse dash (let’s play some new mod songs!) o2jam online just came out today and just tested it… No nostalgia here, just a disappointment on Steam! 🤦♀️pic.twitter.com/VVGr5IXEHnJanuary 17, 2023
Perhaps the strangest thing is that O2Jam Online has no online functionality at all. The whole thing is single player only and this is already pretty much the icing on the garbage cake. This is currently his 18th worst-reviewed game on Steam, according to the score given by . Steam250Still, its percentage rating remains significantly worse than the 17 games above it. Also, as far as I know, it’s the only game on Steam with an overall rating below his 10%.
The only game in recent memory that was equally unpopular was last year’s eFootball. The game initially launched on Steam with a rating of just 8% and quickly became one of the worst reviewed games he (opens in new tab) Platform all the time. Since then, it has risen to 32%. Will O2Jam Online make similar improvements? It seems unlikely at the moment. And it’s very disappointing.
