Two years after being randomly removed from Steam, the mostly monochrome first-person stealth action game Betrayer is back on GOG. And it’s free.
Set in the early days of colonial America, Betrayer begins with players washed up alone and unprepared on the shores of what is now Virginia. A short path leads to a nearby fort, strangely abandoned except for a strange and slightly disturbing ash figure. The surrounding landscape is filled with Native American warriors and Spanish conquistadors, all hostile. The only Maiden in Red who isn’t an enemy in the game is apparently working on her own issues.
The default monochrome and blood red color palette was impressive, but unfortunately Betrayer works more as a concept than as an actual game, and overall it feels a little uneven and boring. It wasn’t bad, but it fell short of its ambitions. “While I would like to applaud their creativity and commend them for their commitment to a unique vision, the quality of Betrayer’s ideas only makes their execution more disappointing,” said executive editor Tyler Wilde. writing. His review is he is 62%.
For unknown reasons, Betrayer has been removed from Steam in 2021. This is unfortunate, but not an uncommon fate. But now, out of the blue (or out of the blue), Resurrected on GOG, and completely free. And it doesn’t seem to be a limited time offer. It’s completely free. Receive it quickly and have a nice day! For the record, this title hasn’t returned to Steam yet. It’s a GOG exclusive, at least for now. Development studio Blackpowder Games, founded by former Mololith Productions staff, has not released a new game since, and appears to have shut down shortly after Betrayer’s release.
I’m not quite sure how to take this sudden and unexpected comeback from digital purgatory, but I’m pretty sure Betrayer is worth at least a few minutes of your time at a low price that does absolutely nothing. It gets a little boring along the way, but it does a wonderful job of recreating the eerie, haunted atmosphere of a rugged, lonely land ruled by something…evil.
Betrayer’s GOG forum is now mostly empty. Luckily, if you have problems or questions, there is plenty of help to dig into. vapor.
