Episode 12 under the Queen’s Umbrella begins with Seongnam preparing to fulfill her duties as the new Crown Prince. hints at how great he looks in his dragon robes, and provides knee guards to prepare him for a long study session and the need to serve the king and perform his duties diligently.
Sung Nam goes round and speaks to the Queen Dowager, keeping his wits about him before this snake. When the Dowager tests his resolve, Sungnam refuses to use his power to dominate or treat others fairly, remaining adamant in his desire to be fair and just. As we know, he has his own plans to overthrow the king, but he even greets Wisung warmly in the hallway. Head off to meet the dowsers.
Hwa-ryung is worried when Sung-nam leaves. She knows that her first day as Crown Prince will be a trial by fire, with a harsh haze ritual in the form of difficult questions posed to him by scholars. This is all a test to find flaws and see if there’s a way to manipulate or find cracks in his defense.

So Hwa-ryung seems to have her hands full with the kids, especially Jo-wol, who shows up at the end. That could cause all sorts of drama in next week’s double episode!
Most of this episode, however, is steeped in drama involving the crown prince and princess. Chungha may be destined to stand up and become a princess, but at the same time, she is plagued with drama and unfortunate circumstances.
Hwa-ryung teaching Chung-ha how to become a noble crown princess is a definite highlight of this episode, and how Sung-nam rises to the challenge that he is the best candidate to become crown prince. It shows a reason.
But another good episode wraps up the double bill this week, leaving the door wide open as to where this one goes next.
