Following the release of a documentary about canceled Valve games, did you know game A never-before-obtained collection of Valve concept art, internet archive. This treasure trove is courtesy of David McGreavy, a gaming industry professional and self-professed Valve superfan.
McGreavy, who recently served as 2K’s marketing producer on games such as Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, explained in the DYKG documentary that Valve has multiple internal connections. One such employee of his kept the parts out of junk when Valve moved offices, then sold them to his McGreavy.
In addition to The Big One—Half Life 2: Episode 3—, McGreavy’s collection includes art from Left 4 Dead, a very early version of Half-Life: Alyx (working title “Alyx and Dog”), Dota Includes spin-offs Underlords, and mythical works. Valve’s space pirate game, Stars of Blood. The Internet Archive post also mentions “Counter-Strike: Source 2”. This is literally the joke game I kept suggesting ahead of the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, his fifth game in the Counter-Strike series. – to global offensive.
DYKG’s video mentions that the office move that triggered this art’s demolition took place in 2016, so the collection of de_dust mockups here is a follow-up to 2004’s Counter-Strike: Source. and will eventually become Global Offensive in 2011. .
Most of Episode 3’s work consists of a rocky desert landscape filled with scrap ships, all with another Combine Citadel looming in the background. These might make sense for the Arctic environment of the Borealis, the Aperture Science ship central to Episode 3’s planned plot. The terraforming of the Combine has transformed the environment into this wilderness. We also get a glimpse of what the ship probably looks like inside, as well as a Combine Advisor-ized version of base game antagonist Wallace Breen. Treatment of Duke Leto II of Atreides in episode 3.
The new Stars of Blood artwork was of particular interest to me as a glimpse into another story-driven Valve game, but much was not revealed. The most surprising detail to me is what appears to be a combined dropship in one of the images, indicating that Stars of Blood may have been intended to share a universe with Half-Life and Portal. Here’s a hint. I was also intrigued by the vaguely Giger-esque, biomechanical casting of the character concept.
While the art for Underlords depicts a sort of spooky Halloween-esque town, Alyx and Dog features a separate set of the title characters and a rocky moonscape. The Left 4 Dead folder contains some alternate character art of him and some discarded Zombie designs of him.
The entire collection and DYKG’s deep dive into this subject is a fascinating peek behind the curtain of an iconic and secretive developer. As an added bonus, this documentary was narrated by Clint Basinger, creator of the Retro PC Channel. LGR He is also the caretaker of Bear-a-Byte PC, a beige Pentium 3 tower inside a giant IKEA teddy bear.
