Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja’s upcoming martial arts action game, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, is just that. first gameplay trailer (opens in new tab) and updated vapor (opens in new tab) page. The gameplay and world on offer almost changed my personal interest in the game from zero to 100 just by throwing a hat on it.
Learned at Microsoft’s Summer Showcase (opens in new tab) Wo Long takes fighting styles derived from Team Ninja’s recent Nioh game, Soulsborne, and replaces them with a legendary ancient Chinese setting. It’s an exciting concept, but there’s a difference between knowing it through a pre-rendered trailer and seeing it demoed with (admittedly cinematic and massaged) gameplay.
The setting is absolutely stunning — I was particularly impressed with the fantastical purple palace gardens that appeared early in the trailer and revisited in the middle. It looks exactly like Soulsborne combat with fun, fast, and more character action.
Wo Long also has an extensive catalog of historical Chinese weapons to base its weapons on. Daos (opens in new tab), Gandaos (opens in new tab)When jeans (opens in new tab)—one seemingly made of jade, and another set on fire in the D&D style. Team Ninja also looks ready to flex their monster design muscles.
It’s amazing and makes me wonder why something like this trailer wasn’t shown at E3. I can’t imagine any further development. It might be a small detail, but my first impression was that he had only one, and I had very few memories of Wo Long until I saw this new trailer.Anyway, It Feels Bad And Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Is About To Be Released vapor (opens in new tab) In “early 2023”.
