In the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast, Xbox Major Nelson Larry Hryb joined Justin Roiland to discuss his new first-person comedy shooter. high on lifeand he revealed that fans have a lot of work to do to find out everything the game hides.
Discussing the game’s non-linear approach (the way players choose which path to take through the game, and how those decisions are reflected both narratively and mechanically), Roiland discusses how much to ensure inclusion in the game. of work was expended. A really deep level of detail. He also revealed that it means there are deeply buried details and secrets:
“Oh my God, there are so many off-golden pass things in this game that people will keep discovering for months, but that’s not the norm. It’s like, “I need to focus on.” And we have a lot of that stuff – we could have cut a lot of it. ”
Roiland didn’t elaborate on exactly what these hidden elements are, but his developer, Squanch, has made it possible for the player to feel like the game is reacting to the choices they make along the way. It was very clear how much effort was put into making it feel.
“We tried to cram a lot of things into this game, from big things like the order of guns you get and some bigger story elements, to small fun comedy stuff.”
Small decisions, like telling one of the aliens guarding the slums which one is hotter, bubbly throughout the game and are what Squanch prioritized, even with the extra voices, animations, etc. needed. But the decision to include all the extra content (and do all the extra work to create it) came out of Roiland’s own interest in the game.
“I’m the kind of player who quickly gets hooked on the game. A good example is fallout 3… taking time, hanging out, going around the edge of the map. I looked at everything and was like, ‘What were they thinking the players were going to do, and what kind of reaction did they build? … It’s just the fun stuff that I love about games.’
