As an avid baseball fan, I was thrilled to see this news. or MLB The Show 23 Bringing new features To the next game known as “Storylines: The Negro Leagues”. In this first season, many of the league’s greatest stars Negro League Baseball Museum and President Bob Kendrick, a national agency dedicated to preserving the rich history of black baseball and its impact on America.
Due to the segregation laws of the time, blacks were not allowed to play alongside white players or participate in Major League Baseball. To counter that, Lube Foster — a great player in his own right and founder of the Chicago American Giants — led a formation along with other black club owners to join the Negro National in 1920. Created a league to provide a way for blacks to play organized baseball. The result is some of the greatest legends you’ve ever played a game with. Many of us gamers MLB The Show 23.
I had the chance to catch up with Ramone Russell, Communications and Brand Strategist at the San Diego studio, to talk about how. MLB The Show 23 We plan to use interactive media to convey this strong American history, how it fits into the framework of the game, and what future iterations of the mode will look like in the next season.
“The Negro League is an important part of baseball and American history, and its iconic figures are not as well-known as other baseball players of the era,” Russell explains. “We plan to use MLB The Show and the interactive medium that is gaming as a gateway to introduce a new generation of baseball fans to the stories of these historical figures and their triumphs over adversity.”
“Storyline is a new gaming experience MLB The Show 23‘ continues Russell. “It guides gamers through a series of stories focused on one player by watching short informational videos about the player. I look back.”
Clearly, what makes it such a great journey for these players is part of the social hardship they’ve endured, overcoming significant adversity in their professional and personal lives. It was refreshing to hear that this ‘gateway’ aims to be very honest in telling the history of these players.
“We’re not talking about the adversity they faced or the ugliness of racism in America at the time,” says Russell. “But MLB The Show is his E-rated game, and 100% of his storytelling is done by the narrator, Black League Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick.”
Established in 1990, the Negro League Baseball Museum As explained on the official site, “the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of African-American baseball and its profound impact on American social progress.” Bob Kendrick started working for NLBM as a volunteer in the early 90’s and later he was appointed president in 2011 and has been responsible for many of the museum’s educational programs, events and more.
As part of his role at the Museum, Kendrick has been a big proponent of telling the history of the Black League and sharing stories about many legendary players. Many of them will be on the Season 1 storyline roster, including Leroy. Satchell” Page, Jackie Robinson, Andrew “Rube” Foster, Hilton Smith, Hank Thompson, John Donaldson, Martin Dihigo, John Jordan “Buck” O’Neill. Having someone like Kendrick front and center brings a certain amount of credibility to this feature that baseball fans are sure to appreciate.
Additionally, as part of this historic partnership with NLBM, MLB The Show and San Diego Studios donate $1 per visit to the museum. MLB The Show 23 Digital Deluxe Edition again captain edition Available in the US through December 31, 2023.
In detailing how the partnership came about, Russell said that this is something San Diego Studios, which has been developing MLB The Show for nearly 20 years, has wanted to do for a very long time, and it just doesn’t matter. showed that It’s about telling the story your team envisioned and finding the right partners to do it the right way.
“Negro leagues are not only an important part of baseball history. More importantly, they are an important part of American history,” Russell explains. “The inspiration to bring the black league to MLB The Show was always there, but we never had the full grasp of how to do it, and it was always a conundrum. I found a way to do it in a way.”
Best of all, this is just the beginning of this new storyline feature on MLB The Show. Next year’s release will feature a new group of Negro League Legends who will tell unique stories of grit, grace and triumph in the face of adversity.
“The Storyline feature is the vehicle we created to tell meaningful stories in the world of baseball with a controller in hand,” says Russell. “The possibilities are endless; however, we are currently focusing on the Black League. It will take us years to properly tell their story with the respect, dignity, admiration and appreciation they deserve.”
When asked what he hoped people would take away from this new gameplay feature, Russell summed it up succinctly.
“I hope that everyone who plays the storylines will come home feeling inspired, educated and enlightened by these stories,” he says. “Anything above that is a bonus.”
