shadow and bone There is a lot of intricate lore that blends stories and myths from all seven of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse books. Season 2 puts certain aspects of Grisha culture at the center of things as Alina (Jessie May Lee) and Mal (Archie Renault) take on a mission to track down the Amp in order to destroy the Fold. Their quest will uncover surprising truths that will create ramifications far beyond any expectations, setting the stage for a potential third season that ventures into the realm of a new Grishaverse.
Understanding the history of amps and how they work is key to understanding this season’s amps. shadow and bone — especially the ending. So let’s break down everything you need to know about your amp, including the final twist.
What is an amplifier?
The amplifier can be traced back to one of the first known Grisha, Ilya Morozova. Hundreds of years ago, Morozova devised a way to increase the power of Grisha to protect her from persecution. Morozova, also known as the Bonesmith, used Merzost and his finger bones to create an impressively powerful animal that, when killed and fused into Grisha’s body, increases its power. At the moment Amp fused with Grisha, they are able to see the creature’s last memories. This sounds like a very uncomfortable experience as it tends to be her POV when animals are killed.
Although rare, some amps exist, including humans, such as Bagra (Zoe Wanamaker) and General Killigan (Ben Barnes), whose bones can also be used to create amps. However, this practice is considered heresy for obvious reasons.
The degree to which the amplifier amplifies Grisha’s powers varies from animal to animal. Some only minimally increase Grisha’s power. There are three legendary amps (Beasts of Morozova) that are so powerful that most people believe they only exist in fairy tales. But like much Lavka folklore, these stories are firmly rooted in truth.
Grisha only used one amplifier in his lifetime, as the amplifier was made using Merzost. But with so many at stake, shadow and bone Season 2 finds Alina racing to collect all three of Morozova’s amps, convinced she’s destined to bring them together and destroy the Fold, regardless of the risk to herself.
What is a Morozova amplifier?
stag
Stagg played a key role in Season 1 shadow and boneAlina dreamed of the creature all season long, but it was Killigan who led the hunt. Rather than destroy the Fold, as he argued, he was to expand it and further establish his dominion over Labuka.
In the books, the stag is said to be part of “the formation of the heart of the world”, the source of all power in Grisha. It is portrayed as a kind being. Unfortunately, that last part isn’t true — though the stag’s mercy is true.
When Maru and Alina found the stag, Alina realized she didn’t have to kill it because the stag chose to share its power with her. While she is in the process of bonding with the deer, Killigan and his followers arrive and shoot Mal with an arrow. Alina is then given a choice. Either she saves Mal or saves Killigan from killing the deer. A distressed Alina chooses Mal, and as a grieving Alina watches, Killigan decapitates a fabled stag.
Kirigin has David (Luke Pasqualino) fuse deer horns to Alina’s upper chest, but they are not fully absorbed into Alina’s body. Killigan also has a small piece of horn embedded in his own hand in order to build a connection that allows him to control Alina’s powers. Create a collar, which is enough for Darkling to control her powers and save us all from the disturbing image of the horns on her chest.)

Once Killigan and Alina are inside the fold, she regains control of her abilities when she cuts the antlers from Alina’s hands. With the stag’s powers now her own, the remaining antlers are completely absorbed into Alina’s body (Hallelujah). A psychic connection develops between him and Alina until he cuts off his hand at the moment.
sea whip
The second of Morozova’s beasts is the sea whip. With the help of Nikolai (Patrick Gibson) and his crew, Maru and Alina track down an ice dragon in a cave on a remote island. Alina is convinced that the sea whip will choose to give her her powers in the same way as the stag beetle, and she orders it captured alive. However, when the Sea Whip attacks Maru, Alina kills it—again choosing Amp’s death to save Maru’s life.Alina has the Sea Whip’s scales fused into her two bodies. but unlike antler, it remains visible on the wrist like an embedded bracelet.
In the books, a little more backstory is given about the Sea Whip.According to legend, the creature is a cursed prince of dragons named Luzalie. Perpetually stuck in the form of a sea serpent, the Lusalier is built to guard the waters adjacent to the true northern part of the Sea, the Path of Bone. As tragic as this story may seem, Lesalier is not at all a sympathetic figure. According to folklore, the Lussarries regularly kidnapped women to become underwater companions, but they all starved to death because there was nothing to feed them under the sea.
Firebird
This is where things get complicated and a little weird. Morozova’s final beast is the Firebird. But Firebird isn’t his third amp. It’s Maru.
hang on. How about Maru the Firebird?
After all, people just assumption Firebird was the third amp. However, the third amp wasn’t mentioned before she was Baghra’s sister, so it’s a joke.
In season 2, Bagra reveals that she is Morozova’s daughter, but he did not accept her because of her shadow abilities. When he broke her prized clay swan, a gift, Bagra lost control of her powers and killed her. and the Sea Whip.turned Bagra’s sister into a third Amp.This power was then passed on through her lineage and eventually to her descendant, Maru. It was
Being Morozova is news to Mal, who remembers nothing about her biological family. After her parents died in the war, young Mal wandered around her country in search of her orphanage and after passing several she chose Kelamjin. Mal’s unknowing attraction to Keramjin with Alina and his enhanced tracking ability is a result of him being one of Morozova’s amplifiers. This revelation leaves Maru wondering if it really means that he and Alina are together romantically, or if it’s just a tool to help them on their journey to bigger and better things.
Overall, I have to say that Maru takes the revelation of being an amp pretty well. At least, better overall than Alina. Alina, who killed the stag and sea whip to save Mal, is devastated to learn that she is supposed to kill Mal to save Ravka. Martyr Mal is ready to sacrifice himself, but Alina is still convinced there is another way.
Unfortunately, the decision fell out of Mal and Alina’s hands as they were injured during the final battle with Killigan. As Mal is dying, Alina stabs him in the heart to destroy the Fold using his amplifier powers. Alina then kills Killigan and tries to have Nina (Daniel Garrigan) use her Heartlender skill to revive Mal. However, it is Alina’s secret use of Merzost that ultimately restores him: Maru regained his life, but lost his ability as an amplifier, losing his tracking ability and his ” I lost my innate sense of ‘true north’. Alina also has to pay the cost of using Merzost. In a big break from her book, Alina discovers that she no longer possesses the powers of the Sacred Sun Summoner, but she can assumed the feared shadow ability of
You don’t even have a firebird?
On the show, no. In the book, yes. However, Firebird is not. Overall bird.
According to mythology, Sankta Vasilka became the first firebird after using the power of Grisha to weave wings and escape power-hungry sorcerers who tried to force her into marriage. became. This outright murder earned Vasilka the title of saint of unmarried women.
The folklore of the Firebird does not end there. This creature is considered a symbol of Labuka and is closely tied to its history.Legend has it that the flight path of the Firebird marked the original borders of Lavka, and that the Lantsov family descended from the creature. makes a lot more sense — or at least had A tale of how the Firebird can shed diamond tears, its wings can heal wounds, its wings can show you the future, and it can sing an army to sleep like one big fiery pudding. There is also
the fire bird ruin and rise When it attacks Maru and Alina, who manage to track it down. However, after Maru’s amplification ability is activated, the Firebird leaves them alone, understanding that they are no longer a threat to life.
The Firebird has a pretty impressive resume and skill set, so it’s no wonder people thought he was a third amp rather than a love-sick Himbo with a surprisingly keen sense of direction.
