Martyr Mal is ready to sacrifice himself, but Alina is still convinced there is another way.

Unfortunately, the decision fell out of Mal and Alina’s hands as they were injured during the final battle with Killigan. As Mal is dying, Alina stabs him in the heart to destroy the Fold using his amplifier powers. Alina then kills Killigan and tries to have Nina (Daniel Garrigan) use her Heartlender skill to revive Mal.
