Sony Pictures recently released Until Dawn, a very loose film adaptation of the Supermassive Games horror adventure. Now, the new movie is receiving some heat for not crediting the writers of the 2015 video game.
Sony does not credit the writers of the Until Dawn game in the new film
As reported by Eurogamer, the creators of the original Until Dawn video game are nowhere to be seen in the filmās credits. Instead, it acknowledges the game by simply saying ābased on the Sony game.ā In response, former PlayStation Narrative Director Kim MacAskill shared their thoughts and experiences working with the company. They also started a petition to properly credit the creators of the game, which has 243 signatures as of this writing.
āAs a former Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Narrative Director who was firmly told that the IP I personally created would NEVER be credited to me as I was salaried (no royalties, no control, no ownership , no acknowledgement) I am struggling with the difference between Neil Druckmannās favour and that of others in your company.ā
āIāve just left Until Dawn where the film director , writers etc were all credited but instead of you mentioning the leading game dev(s) who created this ICONIC game youāre clearly proud of, you just wrapped it as ābased on the sony gameā.ā
āWhy should IP creators keep working for you? Film and TV, which is grotesque at the best of times, still own the need to note the importance of credit.ā
Hollywood Reporter recently interviewed Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, the writers behind the video game Until Dawn, who shared their thoughts on being uncredited.
āI didnāt assume anything, but I thought somebody would have bothered to throw in our names, even during the end credits,ā Fessenden says to Hollywood Reporter. āBut thereās no courtesy in show biz.ā
