Joel and Ellie stand in awe in The Last of Us Remake.

Taylor Swift is heating up promoting her new record. Politicians trading thorns for the midterm elections. people discussing the merits of Last of UsAh, 2014. Nice to meet you again. Long time no see.

Of course today’s conversation is not about the original Last of UsIt’s about the remake. Naughty Dog’s survival-horror hit made waves when it launched on PlayStation 3 in 2013 and was remastered for PlayStation 4 the following year. (It’s also probably most responsible for kickstarting the oft-teased “dad’s game” subgenre.) Now, the studio is releasing a complete remake of the PlayStation 5 from scratch. tomorrow.

called The Last of Us Part Ithis remake aims to elevate the 2013 original to the high graphic benchmarks set by the 2020 sequel. The Last of Us Part II. Visually, yes, The Last of Us Part I does exactly that. But that’s it. This is functionally the same game he played in 2013 and his 2014. Also, if you own a PS5 and he has a PS Plus subscription, the first remaster was also released to players in 2020 as part of his PS Plus collection at no extra charge. like skyrimwithout any modification of the Thomas the Tank engine.

I haven’t forgotten that within a year we are approaching when Last of Us It happens more than when it first came out. Set in 2033, the game imagines a version of America plagued by a mushroom virus that turns everyone into carnivorous monsters. Based on highly realistic fungi.) You play as a grumpy bearded man named Joel and accompany a 14-year-old girl named Ellie. Ellie may hold the key to unlocking a cure for the virus, and she embarks on a perilous journey across the country. The story, told over four chapters, is about the growth of their relationship. It’s a road trip, a bonding adventure, a story of redemption (Joel’s newborn daughter is murdered in a prologue set in 2013), all wrapped up in the high-stakes guise of a mission to save the world. It is rare.

The Last of Us Part I has received rave reviews From across the gaming sphere.it is now sitting in an impressive 89 Not only is it one of the highest rated games of the year on review aggregation site Metacritic, Top rated games in the PS5 libraryYou don’t have to look far to find critics saying this is the “best” way to play. Last of UsOn the other hand, some of you may be wondering why a game that already looks so good needs a remake treatment. (Some have erroneously floated the unsubstantiated idea that The Long Tail exists purely as his marketing for an upcoming adaptation of HBO TV.)

Some points for either side based on what I’ve played so far. The Last of Us Part I Technically impressive, but ultimately an unnecessary remake. I don’t know that widening the wrinkles on Joel’s face greatly improved what made the original such an instant classic.

For context, at least for those familiar with the game’s plot beats, I’m about 4 hours. Last night we wrapped up a set level in Boston and headed to Bill’s second safehouse. You don’t need to play any more to know where you are here. I’ve done this dozens of times before.

To clarify, I Love this game.I’m in a crowd of people who are head-on Last of Us A permanent fixture in the Pantheon, a truly transcendent masterpiece. When Part I Based on it in a concrete way. There’s a truly staggering array of accessibility options that weren’t present in the original run, many of which lower the barriers to playing a mechanically difficult game. We’ve taken advantage of haptics to enable great features, such as the option to have the controller vibrate to the rhythm of the character’s dialogue. The graphical improvement is evident, as evidenced by digital foundryof thorough assessment.

Yeah yeah, cool cool cool.i just played Last of Us (2013/2014).

One thing that’s new to me is that I’ve never noticed this stuffed animal before.

Really, much of this is exactly the same game. Naughty Dog even seems to hold the exact same solution to every optional puzzle. (If you’re having trouble finding the code for the hidden vault, rest assured that the solution, published nine years ago by an avid guide his writer, is somewhere on Google.) The Last of Us Part IIbeing mechanically more detailed than its predecessor in every way, completely relaxes these limitations.

playing Part I It made me seriously rethink the art of re-releases: Which games deserve a complete redux? What’s the benchmark between a remake and a well-crafted remaster? By definition, remakes are essentially zero I know in my head that a remaster is a more or less polished version of an existing game, whereas a new game built from or close to it (both of these phrases are the most broadly possible terms). But does dictionary.com matter if all you really have at hand is the final result?

to me, The Last of Us Part I It looks like a remake, but it doesn’t feel like hell.think: less Demon’s Soul Also Final Fantasy VII Remakemore Halo 2 AnniversaryThe first two were built from scratch, reimagining the source material to varying degrees. The third was the same vehicle with a more glossy paint job. It’s pretty, sure, but I could still feel the ten-year-old bones underneath. The Last of Us Part I It’s much closer to the latter, except there’s no convenient button that lets you switch between the original visuals and the latest respray.

It’s definitely lovely to stare at the photorealism on display here. There’s nothing wrong with catching the bright rays of the noonday sun shining on the surface of waterlogged Beacon Street or watching a weary resignation to a world of partners who know it’s time. Naughty Dog has long staked its pedigree on hyper-realistic visuals. Last of Usin its many incarnations, is included in its works.

With the Boston skyline looming in the background, Joel gazes at a duck boat moored on the beach.

Naughty Dog even included Boston’s ridiculous duck boat…

But the game is strictly about winning the fidelity arms race, and it never was. It was always about story. It’s about searching for a glimmer of hope in a world of nothing, the lengths some people go to hold onto fragments of the future, everyone else is damned. It’s complex, messy, hard to tackle, and interesting in the way some games were at the time. Last of Us Visually it’s already nice enough, and more importantly, human Enough to draw the player into that complex character’s inner life, and stir up a wave of voyeuristic emotion in the subtle expression across Ellie’s face.

The whole calculus behind Part I Wrapped in sticky paper with price stickers. We don’t normally discuss such matters Kotakubut I think Part I It deserves an exception: This is one of a number of current-gen games that set the new baseline at the previous standard of $60 to $70. For those already involved in relatively expensive hobbies, it’s no small thing.was i in a similar position polygonNicole Carpenter of People who haven’t played a game before this yearyes, The Last of Us Part I Definitely the way I like to play. From the point of view of someone who’s played this game a dozen times, if he paid $70 here, he’d honestly be a little burned like he’d bought a pair of shoes he already owned. I guess. (Provided by Sony Kotaku With PS5 cord The Last of Us Part I before tomorrow’s release. )

Anyway, let’s do it again 10 years after Naughty Dog comes out The Last of Us Part I Remake Remastered Reloaded— voila, if the IRL clickers hadn’t devoured us all by then.
