Used properly, Nintendo has really gone crazy with this tech
The fact that so many console exclusives are coming to Switch is a credit to the quality of the games. What if Breath of the Wild was only released on Wii U? Is it still a great game? Yes Yes! Would it have had the effect it did? No way. Admittedly, there have been some missteps. Twilight Princess remains a boring Zelda game, HD or not.
And this goes without saying Wii Ked (Sorry) Virtual Console! I’ve been scouring the eShop for every title I’ve wanted to play for years, but never had the chance to get a physical copy. Yes, this has been made even more pressing by the knowledge that the Wii U eShop will be shutting down in the coming months, thus limiting my time.
Of course, you can’t talk about Wii U games without at least mentioning Nintendo Land. This is a strange one. It’s not Wii Sports or Wii Party, but it’s a great display of what the GamePad can be used for, and has me and my gleeful friends stitched together in that very simple mini-game.
Mario Chase continues to be a highlight and a top contender for future party nights. Some games feel like they repeat this process a little too closely, but when used properly, there’s enough variation to show that Nintendo is really into something. with this technology. I’m still not quite sure what I was supposed to do with those coins and subsequent prizes, but I had an equally good time nonetheless.
experience
Sure, GamePads are great when they work well, but when they don’t, they’re redundant at best and a huge distraction at worst. I’ve played a selection of weird games this past month. While some games used the GamePad effectively (Rayman Legends, Twilight Princess), many others were completely useless. Why I used to play Assassin’s Creed III (a game series that generally can’t keep up) is something I don’t understand, but the gamepad has been used for boring maps with no attention or detail. Seeing home, one thing became very clear. It was a desperately good kit for its purpose.
A very strange and bizarre piece of gaming history and I don’t think we’ll see anything as original as this again
It’s probably the last few weeks I’ve been with the Wii U that I’ve come back to more than anything else. I played on the TV, at my desk, even in bed, but I didn’t feel like I knew. what the console was trying to do. Fun handheld? yeah, hey. Is it a fun home console? yeah, hey. But why should you be average at both when you can be really good at either?
Long before Microsft boasted about the Xbox One, it boasted, “This console plays games, streams TV, massages your feet, and pays taxes!” The Wii U did just that. It was quite a surprise to find a video camera, TV remote, streaming options, and a (deprecated but cool-sounding) social media platform all built into the console. A global pandemic hit five years before him, and mankind is intrigued to spy on a parallel universe that turned to Wii U video chat to sustain its economy. Many of these features are dead in 10 years and the lack of direction seems a bit confusing (Is this for games, TV, or social media?), but The ambition is there. This is certainly a glorious mess.
I don’t think it’s fair to call the Wii U a failure after a month of playing consoles I’ve rejected over the years (unless we’re talking money, in which case difficult to disagree with). Yes, back then it could have been a marketing disaster with a rather large gap between major game releases. It’s a department, very nice, and confusingly bizarre.
If you play like me, you certainly get the chance to choose a console that has a pretty good price tag.You can play the best first-party games without waiting months. With the entire Virtual Console library right there with his GBA, DS and Wii games, marketing campaigns are a thing of the past.I think We can safely say that this isn’t just a Wii accessory, it’s a console in its own right.
Both me and the Wii U are 10 years older now, and we’re both much cooler on the Wii U.
