There aren’t alien robots descending from the sky in Planet of Lana II: Children of the Leaf. Instead, the opening of this sequel is much more somber than the first game, beginning with the exploration of a crashed spaceship and the discovery of a more human-driven enemy. Protagonist Lana and her cat-like companion Mui don’t seem like they’re standing against an impossible threat this time around. They’re older, and the world around them feels a bit smaller. But this planet is no less fantastical, and remains filled with unexplained questions. Planet of Lana II doesn’t grow much beyond the mechanically…

A pixelated tower defense with staying power. The titular bean beasts feel like only one piece of the puzzle that makes their game so darn enjoyable. I wasn’t expecting tower defense when I first saw the title, but I’m glad I took a second look and gave it a chance because Bean Beasts reminds me of just how addicting the genre can be. Fun progression, strategic gameplay, and a stout challenge culminate in an experience that will entice veterans and newcomers alike. A handful of cutscenes portray a lizard on a boat exploring new lands before finding the island where Bean…

RPG developer ZA/UM has a difficult—maybe impossible—wire to walk with Zero Parades, its follow-up to Disco Elysium. The spy thriller wants to strike a different tone to one of the best RPGs ever made while still working in the same verbose style. And while parts of it indeed feel very similar, as PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens noted from the Steam demo, a longer build I played this week at San Francisco’s Game Developers Conference delivered some fantastical spycraft situations that I think embody the ideal of Disco-with-a-twist.Stepping into the shoes of disgraced and confused spy Hershel, brought in from the…

There’s been a lot of heat surrounding Marathon in the lead-up to its launch. Some say it’s not what they want from Bungie, others say it’s a far cry from the glory days of Halo. But cutting through all of the noise, we think Marathon is actually a bold new adventure from Bungie. It may take you a little bit to realise that, though, and that’s really been the throughline of our time with the game so far. It’s good to start, great even, but it only gets better the deeper you go. Today, we’re breaking down our review in…
