Of all the art styles in video games, none has a stronger impact on both developers and players than the humble pixel. Whether it’s an ultra-detailed modern take on what’s possible with pixels, or an homage to old NES and SNES games, pixel art is everywhere. And in games of every generation.

The nostalgic HD-2D visual style used in Live A Live is faithful to the original SNES game yet stunningly detailed, and may be the best HD-2D game ever made.
Pixels are not out of place as every environment is so gorgeous with character models that look distinctive, sharp and crisp, and colorful pixelated environments that blend seamlessly with the 3D aspect. Cliff-top rocks, computer units, and bamboo forests all blend perfectly as jagged grass sways in the wind and warm flames flicker with the orange digital dots of the sunset. Even the crystal clear water looks perfect with a cute little pixel snorkel sticking out of the top and going through an underwater Edo. And with OLED, it’s eye candy.

As you can see from the accompanying screenshots, the aesthetics of this game are sometimes surprisingly good. The pixel art approach is used a lot these days, trying to bring gamers nostalgic memories of their childhood, but it’s rarely done to such a high standard.
Games like Owlboy prove that pixel art as a medium can never be forgotten. As much as the most realistic-looking game of 2018 manages, certain touches such as highly detailed portions of clouds and trees left us in awe.

Graphically, Shredder’s Revenge is a feast. This pixel party doesn’t have his CRT filter, which may disappoint some, but it’s drawn so beautifully and accurately that it’s hard to garner any complaints.
