If you love Citizen Sleeper, Text-heavy sci-fi RPGs, and the game’s new free DLC, Episode 1: Flux is a welcome addition. It also builds a wonderful world, deepens the well of vibrant characters, and at the same time adds difficult new story decisions. But it’s also a great excuse to start this melancholic game for the first time. It left an impression on me and is still one of the best releases of the year.

of Citizen Sleeper, You play role-play as a sleeper. Sleepers are neither human nor mechanical, but are wholly owned by Megacorp’s Essenalp. Your body is designed with “planned obsolescence” and you must take your own kind of medicine to stay alive. The game unfolds throughout Arin’s Eye, a nasty space station that is a victim of late capitalism. The station was abandoned and many of the remaining people organized across factions. Others simply try to live another day or find an escape route. Among these inhabitants, you build your life. You have to find a way to get a job, help you where you can, and afford your medicine to fight another day.

Flux updates will begin in the mid-to-late game location, Greenway. It’s less dense than the rest of the station and is a great place to park your new story. DLC introduces new variables. A refugee who lives in a small fleet and is looking for a home in The Eye, but is stuck because of the station’s bureaucracy. This is a sharp addition that has changed the way we approach the entire playthrough. Far from feeling added, Flux naturally blends into existing gameplay tapestries. In an unstable paradigm shift, it must be considered that it affects the eye large enough to handle the influx of human life. How does Ai support them?

First, there is the problem of helping refugees find asylum.Like all Citizen SleeperThe quest, Flux, is about the consequences of competing interests and growls. You’ll meet several new characters, including Eche, the captain of the climbing briar, and Peak, the crew of the ship. Both come from another station called Hawthorne, but they have their own problems due to the ownership of the company. Refugee needs are easily lost in these power struggles. I decided not to leave these people without resources and support, regardless of bureaucratic hurdles.

Thus, this chapter of the new quest has shifted my priority to investing in the long-term feasibility of the station. In previous playthroughs, you played as an operator and primarily hacked the station’s digital infrastructure. I focused on making friends and sticking to them, rather than research efforts on the Greenway that might benefit more people. Playing Flux as a mechanic with a new in-game save file courtesy of developer Jump Over the Age gives us space to experiment with new playstyles while navigating a new set of constraints. Dissatisfied with being completely focused on the individuals with whom they were connected, they set out to shape their playstyles in an attempt to make more choices for the benefit of station sustainability.

Citizen Sleeper Players always have to make difficult decisions. There are countless trade-offs between undertaking a job, supporting a faction, or supporting an individual. This is made more urgent by the core mechanics of the game. Every morning you need to roll a limited number of dice to wake up and use it wisely. Do you help the man and his adopted daughter escape their eyes? Would you like to hack the lower abdomen of the station or help botanists understand why mushrooms thrive here?

Like each of the excellent quest lines in the base game, Flux restructured the way I approached time as a sleeper, and it revolved around staying or leaving that looming question again. This is not a spoiler. The game starts by asking: Do you want to escape, find the truth, or make a life at this ranking station? And as you do your day at The Eye, you’ll participate in many of the station’s power struggles and find new ways to organize. Flux adds depth to the game and effectively reconstructs the final choices made in the first playthrough.

DLC ends with a cliffhanger. This is the first of three episode updates, so we’ll have to wait until October to find out where the story goes before we conclude with Episode 3 of 2023. I mix excitement and hideout and wait. But I’m happy to have more excuses to revisit one of my favorite games this year. Especially if the new story keeps reconstructing everything.

Citizen Sleeper Episode 1: Flux It will be released on July 28th on Windows PC, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. The DLC was reviewed on PC using the pre-release download code provided by Jump Overthe Age. VoxMedia has an affiliate partnership.
