One of the first ideas I started making giant shoulder, was the silhouette of a smaller character riding on the back of a much larger character. And what if you could control these characters at the same time? Will it be fun?
It took a lot of experimenting and prototyping to find the sweet spot, and it was a refreshing yet familiar experience. We thought that if we separated out the types of combat between these characters, one character would do all the melee combat and be a big, powerful mech. And another character, perched on its back, is a small, agile, gun-wielding frog?
When I found this combination, I knew I had found the core of the game. The next question we asked ourselves was what kind of world are these characters in. What are their goals in the game?
We’ve always been big fans of sci-fi, and we knew we wanted a world where the dark forces these heroes had to overcome—the classic theme of darkness and light. But how do you actually take this subject and create an interactive way for players to experience it?
I envisioned the entire world changing from a barren and dark world to a vibrant, lush, life-filled world in a cinematic fashion after an intense boss fight. When we experimented with how players could do this in real time, we found it fun and exciting, and it became a pillar of player ability.
Speaking of abilities, the final core idea behind the game is giant shoulder It feels like a colorful playground with a vast arsenal of sci-fi gadgets and weapons for players to explore and tinker with.
Players will encounter weapons and abilities such as grenade launchers that shoot fireworks, giant stepping shoes, and surfable shields. Combat at its core is all about experimenting with different equipment combinations to find great combos that keep things fresh and exciting.
Combat is the main pillar of the gameplay, but we knew we wanted a story to set the game and feel grounded in the characters and the world. Entropic forces are taking over the universe. It is the player’s job to fight this dark force and restore order and balance to the universe.
As you complete more levels and save more worlds from the forces of entropy, your heat meter will increase and you’ll gain access to increasingly difficult levels. Exceeding a certain heat threshold unlocks a special story boss encounter on the way to the final boss.
Along the way, you’ll get new weapons for both Froggie and the heroic galactic robot, new armor, XP to spend on skill trees, and dyes to further customize your character’s appearance.
You can customize your own frog and robot with a number of cosmetics unlockable in-game, but the above four are only available as bonuses for pre-ordering the game.
