Today is the 30th anniversary of Crystal Dynamics, which was founded in 1992. On Twitter, Crystal Dynamics celebrated its longevity with a message highlighting some of the games, such as Tomb Raider. Gex and the Legacy of Kain series.
“Thanks to everyone who has enjoyed our game for years, from the adventures of Gex’s pop culture to the legendary quests of Raziel and Kain to the adventures of Lara Croft’s world. We are traveling with you and looking forward to all our exciting adventures together in the future. ” I read the tweet..
Nodding to Kane and Raziel is not an exact confirmation of the new game set in the land of Nosgos, but it is a noteworthy reference to the series that have been dormant for many years. This message will also be sent after Crystal Dynamics (and several other studios previously owned by Square Enix) have been acquired by Embracer Group.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but after the acquisition, Embracer Group didn’t waste time announcing plans for the studio it bought. As the Embracer Group mentioned at the time, the company sees great potential in creating sequels, remakes, remasters, spin-offs, and transmedia projects based on all new IPs.
Again, nothing has been confirmed, but looking at how Embracer Group works, the resurrection of the Legacy of Kain along with the HD reminder is a very clear possibility. For example, Destroy All Humans got a remake released in 2020 by THQ Nordic, one of Embracer Group’s subsidiaries. In addition, a remake of Destroy All Humans 2 will be available for PC and console on August 30th.
Another example of Embracer Group’s strategy is the Darksiders franchise. This is because both of the original games received an enhanced version under THQ Nordic, a proper sequel in the form of Darksiders 3, and a spin-off of Darksiders Genesis. It’s clear that if an expanded version of the game sells well and can be created with reasonably low risk, it may extend the IP with new titles.
For a game series that has a 50% chance of resurrection at some point, the Legacy of Kain’s resurrection now seems less exaggerated. If the Embracer Group plays the card correctly, a remaster or remake of the beloved Soul River, with all the cut content restored, could be a bestseller to help revive the occult classic.
With the Legacy of Kain and Gex, the Embracer Group is still highly regarded and has access to multiple titles with an enthusiastic fan base.
