Hello everybody! I’m Diego Ordonez, Lead Programmer at Rubber Duck Games. Action RPG with plenty of humor evil wizard is currently out on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. We would like to give you a behind the scenes look at this game and how it came about.
beginning
when to start evil wizard, I wanted to make a game that has humor and funny moments throughout the game. Additionally, I’ve always been very intrigued by characters who use magic, like sorcerers and wizards. The concept of magic is great from a narrative perspective because it allows designers to create the rules they need to make gameplay and story meaningful. Finally, I wanted an innovative hook that I could use to tie everything together. I decided to give it a twist and show what happens after the final boss is defeated. This environment gave me the opportunity to explore humor in a different way. Every gamer has played a game where the main character is a hero and defeats an evil wizard. As such, players felt they could immediately understand the game’s setting and narrative context.

find humor
Once the setting took shape, I started writing jokes in the form of dialogue between characters. These can be found throughout the game. Evil wizards tease her NPCs, enemies chat with other enemies in funny cinematics, and sometimes evil wizards talk directly to the player. Breaking through the 4th wall has always been interesting to me, and the medium of video games offers a very unique way to do this because the player controls the protagonist.
Once I started working on it, I realized that there was humor in other parts of the game besides the dialogue. Ruben Gómez was responsible for the game’s aesthetics, and he’s also a very funny guy. He implemented many funny moments throughout the game in the form of environmental art and collectibles. These can be found at almost every level in the game. For example, underwear hanging from the roof of a castle, paintings of evil wizards with pop culture characters, and numerous rubber ducks that reference pop culture characters we know and love. collectibles, etc.
Additionally, pixel art animator Pablo Pérez did a great job creating interesting animations for the enemies and NPCs. These are everywhere, from his concept art (such as a chef attacking by brandishing a frying pan with red pepper) to the way most enemies die.

But what about actions?
during development evil wizard, recognized the need to provide players with a good action RPG that complemented the game’s humor and setting. We wanted to develop a good combat system and exploration design for those players who couldn’t find it. evil wizard very funny. We started by making combat central to the game. This is another pillar of the game and comes in the form of melee combat with huge bosses, optional mini-bosses, a very extensive system of spells and elements, and a risk and reward system. Inspired by other Action RPGs and Metroidvanias, we turned the entire world into a castle of intertwined rooms. Players must explore there to reach the final level. We filled the levels with secrets, puzzles, random combat encounters, and funny movies to balance combat, exploration, and humor. Our producer, Gonzalo Banchi Martinez, managed most of the initial design of the castle’s rooms. Each room has a setting. Castle patios, armories, laboratories, dungeons, and more. We created several connections between these rooms to allow players to find secrets and defeat optional mini-bosses hidden throughout the map during exploration.
