Halo developer 343 Industries says Master Chief and Cortana are staying under its roof, but reports of a significant reduction in Halo’s development staff mean it will continue to develop future Halo content. It casts doubt on the studio’s ability to do so.

This story started last week when we found out Halo Studio Influenced To Microsoft plans to lay off 10,000 people.Since the news broke, speculation has been rampant about Microsoft’s plans for its flagship franchise. rumor Microsoft could shift Halo development to a separate studio entirely, leaving 343 Industries in more of a producer role. These rumors prompted 343 Industries to speak up over the weekend to calm the turmoil.

Pierre Hintze, Head of Studio at 343 Industries Shared a message on Halo’s official Twitter account“Halo and Master Chief are here to stay. 343 Industries will continue to develop Halo now and in the future, including the epic story, multiplayer, and other elements that make Halo great.”

But for studios struggling to meet Halo Infinite release date More than oncecan the recently miniaturized 343 still handle the development of a big-budget AAA first-person shooter franchise? It’s hard to say.

IGN reached out to Xbox representatives for comment prior to publication.

‘Hard Hit’

IGN has learned that the Halo development team of 343 has been significantly cut. He, one of the 343 former employees affected by the layoffs, estimates that about a quarter of the 343 employees were affected, but this is not a hard statistic. I also learned that about 30 people were laid off in 343’s art department alone, and a former employee said he said 343 Industries “has been hit hard, impacting positions in all areas.” .

Meanwhile, at least one senior-level source who knows the inner workings of 343, but is no longer with the studio, told IGN that it’s being scaled back to the publishing team. Based on conversations I’ve had with knowledgeable sources, things seem to be going on with 343, increasing my confidence that 343 will no longer be the sole developer of Halo when things settle down.

Looking through the LinkedIn profiles of other laid-off employees reveals a hit to those working in Halo Infinite’s engine, presentation, VFX, gameplay, game design, and more important departments. It’s clear that 343 is a vastly different studio than it was just seven days ago. Additionally, 343 Industries had already dealt with the growing pains of launching a live service game in a whirlwind of highs and lows last year since Halo Infinite’s original release.

Praise for both Infinite was included, despite their strong launch at the end of 2021. A fresh take on the Halo campaign and the franchise First-ever free-to-play multiplayer, cracks began to appear immediately.Fans reacted immediately Infinite’s controversial multiplayer progression systemthat’s why 343 scramble to fix shop and battle pass.

But the problem didn’t stop there. Cancel split screen co-op, Long delay to forge modeWhen long drought During the first season of Halo Infinite. Just five months after what seems to be the start of Halo’s big comeback, the community couldn’t stand.

343 witnessed a rapid creative exodus after launch. 343 Founder Bonnie Ross, Multiplayer Creative Director Tom FrenchWhen Lead Narrative Designer Aaron Linde All will retire in 2022.

Former Senior Multiplayer Designer Patrick Wren, currently working on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, generously credited 343’s leadership in a post on Twitter.

“The layoffs at 343 shouldn’t have happened and Halo Infinite should be in a better place. Both of these reasons are because the top incompetent leadership during Halo Infinite development is making Halo the best it can be.” “Because it puts a lot of stress on people who work so hard,” Ren wrote.

In addition to these departures, 343 faces another creative void at the top. Director of Halo Infinite. Joseph Staten Leaving 343 to Return to Xbox PublishingStaten’s return to Halo will always be provisional arrangementbut his departure still causes concern among Halo devotees.

Regardless of what happens to Halo in the future, it’s clear that plans for Halo Infinite’s first decade haven’t played out the way Microsoft wanted them to. Halo Infinite Season 3: Echoes Within is still set to launch in early March, adding new maps, modes, and weapons to the game.
