Today we celebrate the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC! Like the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered released earlier this year, this is a close partnership with Insomniac Games, Marvel Games, and PlayStation. Collaboration. He can use his DualSense controller for PS5 with a wired USB connection to enjoy the full DualSense controller experience, including adaptive trigger feedback and haptic responses. The game also supports various other peripherals and a myriad of remapping options via Steam Input. The game is also fully playable with mouse and keyboard, and a key part of its development is the ability to fully enjoy the game as the player swings his web at high speeds or engages in epic battles against enemies with Miles. The idea was to create a default control scheme that makes you feel like you are being controlled by power.
To give you a better understanding of how mouse and keyboard controls were implemented in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we’d like to introduce you to Bart Veldstra, Senior Systems Programmer at Nixxes.
“When we start working on mouse and keyboard controls, we first look at comparable titles and previous projects. Then, list all the actions that the player can perform in the game, which actions occur most often, and what combinations are possible.”
What follows is a one-to-one mapping. “Simply assign every button on your gamepad to a key or button on your keyboard and mouse. In this initial layout, the WASD keys for movement, E and F for action and attack, etc. are commonly found in games. Use key bindings.”
The team then plays with this basic mapping to see where potential problems lie. Bert explains: Easy, with a gamepad that gamers are accustomed to. It doesn’t make much sense on the keyboard, which is a very complex instrument. ”
“Based on that experience, I decided to create keyboard bindings specifically for actions that use two gamepad buttons, such as Finisher, Web Strike, Yank & Throw, and Zip to Point. It makes it easier to perform complex actions.”
The sheer number of keys on the keyboard makes this possible, says Bart, but it’s important to keep a balance when adding additional keys. Adding them as new key bindings on top of existing actions risks the player having to reach further to press the button. Let’s take a step back and see what Miles can do. Since these are standard ability modifiers, I decided to put the trigger on the right mouse button as a modifier. Holding down the right mouse button and pressing a key for an action such as punch or jump activates a variant. This way you don’t overload the player with extra keys. ”
It’s not always easy to find a one-size-fits-all approach when working with mouse and keyboard layouts. The multitude of abilities and actions players have in both Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales proved to be a challenge, says Bart.
