i’ve pretended a lot super smash bros A crown, but few people have stopped landing. MultiVersus is a live service-style interpretation of Nintendo’s flagship fighting mash-up, the latest adaptation featuring Warner Bros. branded characters from DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo and more. It borders on absolutely bizarre at times, and with its main mode focused on co-op, we figured we’d tackle this review of the open beta as a duo.

Sammy: While reviewing the current state of MultiVersus, I think we should start by saying that this is a live service game. This means that things will improve, expand and adapt over time. That means that LeBron James will be added as an additional character today. But I can’t wait to dig into his move set!

Steven: Aren’t you mad that we have LeBron James in this game?! I think we really need to talk about how weird the roster is. Warner Bros. clearly has a lot to offer from a wide range of media. Here, characters dating back to the 1930s are mixed with much more contemporary pieces. Tom and Jerry the Iron Giant, Steven Universe, game of thrones’ Arya Stark is weird, but definitely funny.

Sammy: Yeah, what really impressed me was how different every character played. One of my personal favorite comic characters is Harley Quinn. But then I started to gravitate towards Superman. He’s a bit slow, but he has this move that allows him to catch opponents in the air and throw them out of the ring. It’s tough to execute, but when you pull it off well, it’s so bad.

Steven: As you say, their move sets really lean into who they are, so you can see that each fighter is carefully crafted. , you can use it to do a quick upgrade. Bugs He can easily burrow under the ground and use various props and weapons when playing as a bunny. I also really like Wonder Woman who uses shields and other abilities to make more defensive moves. Overall, I think the game is relatively balanced and all the characters are fun to play with, but Taz is currently a nightmare thanks to her extremely cheap and powerful attacks.

Sammy: oh i definitely Hate Who currently plays as Taz. But yeah, assuming they sorted it out, you definitely got some Super Smash Bros. stuff where every character feels completely unique. , but there’s a lot going on. Basically, shoot projectiles from her megaphone. This sometimes knocks out your opponent’s evidence. Once you have collected enough evidence, you can call the police. Police arrest the culprit and remove him from the stage. It’s so happily weird!

Steven: What’s even nicer is that each character has a way to help their allies. The main mode of the game is 2vs2, which is built into the roster. I mentioned Wonder Woman before. She can dash to her teammates to give both players protective shields. This is good for stopping the next hit’s damage and knockback, another good example of him is Reindog (the only original character in the game so far) who tethered himself to an ally and You can roll back and put other players at great risk. Each character has something like this that emphasizes co-op play. Perks also extend this. You can equip these passive buffs before a match and they will apply to your teammates as well. If both choose the same perk for her, it increases its effectiveness and adds something to consider when playing with a companion.

Sammy: While it’s impressive how much depth the gameplay has, it’s safe to say that MultiVersus is pretty barebones overall right now. As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, it’s clearly going to be expanded. The main menu also has options that are currently greyed out. That said, I think playing Free For All is a really chaotic and fun alternative to the main mode. I actually enjoy the one-on-one option. Because you have to think a little bit more about your movements. It’s like Street Fighter! It’s worth mentioning that you can play against bots even in co-op mode. This feels good.

Steven: It all feels pretty sophisticated too. The UI can be pretty busy with menus, but I think the presentation in general is strong. The devs have done a great job of making all the characters look uniform while still being recognizable. Some people like the map to be haphazard. Some are a little bland, but others are excellent, like Scooby’s Haunted Mansion. As for audio, the soundscape is surprisingly clean. You’ll know which hits lead, when you’ve successfully dodged, and more. The music isn’t half bad, but you could look for more songs brought in from shows and movies.

Sammy: I think I should also mention netcode, as it’s one of the big problems with Super Smash Bros.to play the game online No good. But personally speaking, I can honestly say that in the 100 or so games I’ve played with him, I haven’t had any lag issues at all. Not at all. Of course, your mileage will vary, but I can honestly say that every match I played felt like local multiplayer. To be fair, modes like Free for All add a bit more latency, but not by much. It’s really impressive!

Steven: I’ve had very similar experiences in the past, so it was very easy to play each match. Completing a round gives you points to build your meter to the next tier, with each level rewarding you with cosmetics, in-game currency, and other bits and bobs. There are some great items especially the Premium Battle Pass that you can earn, but progress feels like a glacier at the moment. , you need dozens, maybe hundreds of matches to get the most out of it. Obviously, this is an open beta with a pre-season pass, so the economy may readjust in the future. I hope so because it feels like progress is very slow at the moment.

MultiVersus Review - Screenshots 5/5

Sammy: i totally agree. To be honest, I think this game will probably draw criticism for its monetization. So it seems to pick and rotate free characters and you have to unlock them with the gold you earn, it’s very slow to get this right now so from 1,500 gold per character he has 3,000 gold I feel the price is a little high. Of course, almost everything can be unlocked using a premium currency called Gleamium. It’s more convenient. I think some items are a little exorbitant right now, like various skins.I’ll have to see how this changes though – to be honest it’s easier to get gold when you own a handful of different characters so maybe putting a little money in I think is best. But I get it – not everyone wants to do that. Possible There are no pay-to-wins as you play the game without spending and everything is balanced, but in the end I think you have to spit out a small amount to get started.

Steven: Despite its shortcomings, I think MultiVersus is in a pretty good position. Player First Games has a clear path forward, expanding the game with more characters, maps and modes, and the Warner Bros. Archive has plenty for the team to work on. It’s just getting started, but it’s already popular and I feel like it’s going to last a long time. I think the future is bright if the studio can continue to balance itself and ensure the economy is fair.

Sammy: I can’t wait to add Harry Potter!
