Wow! what was it? April, buddy. So it’s time to take a look back at the jewels that shone in the Switch eShop during the stupidest months.

As if your wishlist wasn’t already groaning at the sheer number of great games waiting to get your hands on it, here it is with monthly reminders of games you may have missed in the last month or so. Here are the Switch eShop games we reviewed in April with scores of 8/10 or better, and Team NL’s cumulative top 3 picks.

With all of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters released individually on the eShop, things have been a little cloudy this month, especially given the very limited availability of physical versions. I gave it a very respectable 8/10 overall. Individual games may fall short of that point, but we decided to include them all in our round of voting. More is more fun, right?!

First, though, a great game that failed to manage its podium place very well…

honorable mention

There were a handful of winners that hit the eShop in April, all of which are worth investigating.

Cannon Dancer Osman (Switch eShop)

Cannon Dancer Osman (Switch eShop)

the publisher: Inning game / Developer: United Independent GmbH

release date: April 13, 2023 (united states of america) / April 13, 2023 (UK/EU)

Cannon Dancer Osman sneaks into the bronze medal frame. This spiritual sequel to his Strider arrived on the Switch (and elsewhere) this month, a whopping 27 years after his arcade debut, and managed to impress many of us here. .

Tom called it “an undeniably sophisticated product” [with director Kouichi] You can feel Yotsui’s thirst for action movies everywhere,” giving it a very respectable 8/10 rating.

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories (Switch eShop)

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories (Switch eShop)

the publisher: XSEED game / Developer: Froch club

release date: April 6, 2023 (united states of america) / April 6, 2023 (UK/EU)

I checked this out at PAX East and was pleased to find that the finished product lived up to that great first impression. Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a classic adventure RPG with a Game Boy style presentation. mother fan.

In his 8/10 review, Austin described it as “cute on the outside, but dark on the inside” and said, “It’s a great story-driven, exploration-based mystery RPG, and it’s straightforward.” If you’re looking for GB nostalgia filled with wit, charm and a touch of darkness, look no further.

Final Fantasy VI (Switch eShop)

Final Fantasy VI (Switch eShop)

the publisher: square Enix / Developer: square Enix

release date: April 19, 2023 (united states of america) / April 19, 2023 (UK/EU)

See, this is what happens when you give them an inch! There’s always a big debate about which is the best when it comes to Final Fantasy, but among all the pixel remasters it’s finally (finally!) dropped on the eShop in March, Final Fantasy VI was a clear favorite of Team NL. Lowell called the game “the crown jewel of the collection” in his review of the 6-game bundle, calling it “an expansive story”, “great steampunk aesthetic”, and “his one of the best villains in gaming history”. praised.

You’ve probably played it before. Perhaps it’s time to play again.

How the eShop Select Top 3 are determined: At the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff votes for their favorite title from among the games selected by the editorial department. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop titles in that particular month and reviewed on Nintendo Life. Select eligible games based on review score.

Staff members are then asked to vote for the three games they believe deserve a spot at the top of the list. 1st choice is 3 points, 2nd choice is 2 points, 3rd choice is 1 point. These votes are then tallied to create a top 3 list, with the overall winner taking home the top prize for the month.
