For over two years, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has (opens in new tab)has become a key pillar of Nvidia’s graphics card lineup. The combination of strong performance, quality feature set, and great pricing (when not mining) has made it a model that consistently attracts mainstream gamers. But as the sun sets, this venerable frame pusher seems to have reached the end of its life.
According to a post by bench life (opens in new tab), Nvidia has stopped shipping the GA104 chip used in the RTX 3060 Ti. Of course, the logical reasoning is that Nvidia is gearing up for the release of his RTX 4060 variant and wants to wipe out its existing inventory before the launch of the new card.
However, just because the production of the RTX 3060 Ti chips has stopped doesn’t mean that stock will be depleted anytime soon. It will still be available for a while, and you might even find a bargain if you’re lucky.
Nvidia’s xx60 cards are always popular. The old GTX 1060 is still near the top of the list of most popular GPUs, with the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti right up there. As an Ampere generation card, it offers a significant performance boost over the RTX 20 series cards, and reviews at launch were full of praise. Jacob gave a rating of over 90%. (opens in new tab) Achieving that with PC Gamer is no easy task.
However, the RTX 3060 Ti has issues when it comes to availability. In the midst of a massive GPU shortage in 2021 (opens in new tab)The RTX 3060 Ti was almost impossible to get hold of, especially before the low hash rate variants came along. The few cards available have been hit with extremely high prices.
RTX 4060 Ti 8GB (opens in new tab) Expected to launch in late May, with a 16GB version and a non-Ti RTX 4060 coming later, probably in July (opens in new tab). Unless there is a new crypto mining boom, the RTX 4060 Ti is unlikely to suffer supply problems like his RTX 3060 Ti. If Nvidia is altruistic and he makes the RTX 4060 Ti attractively priced, it could become the most popular card in 2023, if not 2024.
Cheers to the RTX 3060 Ti. Goodbye, old dog.
