Arkane’s anti-vampire shooter Redfall (opens in new tab) won’t be unveiled until next week, but the launch trailer was revealed today, featuring plenty of action in a vampire-infested town and a clever Easter egg that fans of the former immersive sim will surely enjoy.

Coming back to the trailer, I can’t say I was really blown away. If there’s one thing the world doesn’t need anymore, it’s video game trailers backed by downtempo covers of old hits, but here’s one more thing to add. It’s lazy, tiresome, unoriginal, and a habit that needs to be stopped. (Probably not, I know.)
Easter eggs, on the other hand, are clever, if not entirely surprising. At his 23 second mark in the video, the “Welcome to Redfall” map appears on screen with a note about some kind of rally being held at the local fire station. What should be noted is the time of the rally. It will be held at 4:51 am.
0451 is a very famous number in the immersive sim genre, used as a password or keycode in many games from the original System Shock to Deus Ex, BioShock, Dishonored, and more. Deathloop has him a 0451 Easter egg and an achievement, which Weirdwest uses to unlock the vault, and Atomic Heart references it early in the game. The figure’s appearance in the Redfall trailer is arguably intended to connect the game to Arkane’s previous releases, almost all of which are well-known as excellent examples of the immersive simulation genre. I appreciate the nod, but I can’t help but wonder if it could backfire.
